Still not paying attention, or more so ignoring statements I've made in black and white.
Tell you what, you ever find yourself in Wolfe City, Texas we can see what I know how to do without touching the scope one single time. No turret dialing, and you can run the stop watch. We can play HORSE, with a hundred dollar bill, and a dinner of the winner's choosing on the line. Then you'd have to eat dinner w/him!

All right everyone take a deep breath and let's agree that there is more than one way to do this stuff.
JG, I agree with you. If a person wants to have confidence in being able to shoot a deer at 400+ yards then they should invest time and $ in the equipment to do so. AS LONG AS THEY PRACTICE.
Nogalus, I also agree with you. The vast majority of hunters will never take a shot on a whitetail at more than 200 yards. If someone sights their rifle in at 100, 150 or even 200 yards they should be fine. AS LONG AS THEY PRACTICE.
I was just curious how others decide where to zero their rifle and what influences that decision.

I would say a 200 yard zero is a great method.
The most common one, though, will be some amount high (1", 2", or 3") at 100 yards. Why? Most people won't shoot their rifles at the range at more than 100 yards. Ideal? No, but it's a fact.
I don't argue for the sake of arguing. My point is that, at most ranges most folks shoot at game, once a good rifle is sighted in properly - it's not magic or luck to be able to kill game cleanly even with basic equipment most use. The numbers show that clearly for any medium sized caliber.
Know your rifle/cartridge, have basic good form, keep your shots at reasonable distances - and hunt with confidence. Practice helps - a lot.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I zero all my scoped rifles at 100 yards, and will adjust from there as needed.

We can play HORSE, with a hundred dollar bill, and a dinner of the winner's choosing on the line. What it always come down to. (I'm a bada** and you're not! )I didn't say one thing about what you can or can't do. That's your game, not mine. You're the one not paying attention. You insinuating that I was going to be fiddling with a turret, and/ or other equipment. You chose to ignore that I stated that there is another way of doing it, making a hold. This is a "sight in for hunting" thread. The methods discussed in this thread work for hunting. Period. Again, you ignored that I agreed there are other ways to do so. I even wrote of a way to get exact holds with a simple duplex reticle. Here's some more heresy - if the animal is under 250 or so, sometimes I don't even range him (depends on the circumstances). In practice, it's not necessary at those ranges with the sight-ins discussed. Just put the crosshairs about 1/3 of the way up, squeeze the trigger, and watch him die in short order. Would you care to see pictures from the last six months of me doing the same thing? I can even go back to a bull elk at 200 yards, in 2013Oh, and if you aren't dialing, you're "estimating" every bit as much as me. 100% incorrect. Everyone that blesses me with their time and business I have dial out to 800, then start over at 200, with their scope on their 100 yard zero, and have them make exact holds for distance and wind, back out to 800 yards. There's plenty of people on this forum that can testify to doing it. Ignoring the rebuttle does not make your case look better.

Sorry for the derailment, Ritter. NP has a talent for making that happen. Of course, he'll put that back on me.

Yep, ask for simple answers and then get into a pessin match - not worth it. Maybe these two guys need to meet for a shoot out at long ranges. JM

(at long range. not like an actual step off ten paces then turn and fire kind of shoot out. nope, not that kind.)
