bought a Rem 11 - based on the Browning humpback.
That gun was almost a Winchester. The story goes that John Browning had the gun designed and was going to sell it to Winchester, like so many before, but some execs at Winchester were reluctant to sign a royalty deal with Browning on it. Browning got fed up and went to F.N. and gave them manufacturing rights then later negotiated manufacturing rights with Remington, who was willing to pay the royalty. The 11 eventually led to the 1149, 1100, 1187...
I know a few people that have Grampa's 11 stashed in the back of the closet. I picked up a Remington 11 few years ago and like it a lot. You can usually find one in good shape for $300 give or take, not a bad place to start if you need a good auto.
Shoot. Eat. Repeat.
