Why do they have to be $950? I've bought a tikka CTR .308 and a Tikka Super Varmint .308 both for under $600.

New? How recently? Where?

I just went to Cabela's site and it was $950. That's why I posted that price. I'm sure it could be had cheaper, just as the Savages I listed could. I got a heavy-barrel model 11 308 for $400. But I'd love to know how to get a CTR for $600.

Weatherby Vanguard II.

497.00 at Buds, ships free.

Vanguard II in .308 at Buds

You're not going to do any better for under 500 bills, IMHO.

There's also a carbine version, if you don't like the 24" barrel.

Go hold them and see which fits you best and one you like the looks/feel of best.

We all have our favorites and what works for us and that is what we will recommend most of the time.

The super varmint I bought probably 4 years ago, CTR 2 years ago both were used in like new shape purchased from individuals selling on different FB gun groups. The Super Varmint I bought for $500 less than an hour after the guy posted the ad. I have since regrettably sold it because the 26" barrel was a pain to content with. The CTR will hopefully never leave my hands.

I have 2 Ruger American Predators 22-250, 308 both do any thing i ask. The 308 is hard to find at times.
i would not expect a $1000.00 rifle to shoot any better.

when the going gets really tough, I sit down and rest

Like others have said, I would look at the Ruger Predator and the Savage Hog Hunter. I've heard good things about the TIKKA CTR but it's about twice the price so it depends on your budget.

Twist rates might affect the choice. Most are 1-10, but there are some 1-11 ones out there.

Yeah I was just talking new prices. He can probably get a Savage for under $300 used, but he seemed to be looking at new guns. Regardless, a like-new CTR for under $600 is a bargain. Let me know if you're ever in the market to sell it. smile
