Watermelons. They are expensive, heavy, bulky, have a short shelf life, but hogs love them.
Otherwise, CORN.

Corn.
There is a place near Smithville that has best price on corn and it's even cheaper if you bring your own bags and string to tie them shut!

At the risk of sounding like I'm just a camp follower, I suggest plain ol' corn.

Corn works great, but it can be better. Put a couple bags of corn in a trashcan and mix it with some old beer and maybe a sunkist or some sort of very sugary soda and let it sit in the sun. Best bait there is. Even better if you add some hog wild in there too.

My lease buddies got their hands on some kind of concoction a friend of theirs made up. Corn, jello, kool aid and something else in a trash can and left it in the sun for 3 years. It made catfish bait smell like roses. One of them touched my neck after he'd washed his hands a dozen times and it still left a residual smell on my neck. We hunted over after it had been out all day....never saw a hog.

Corn soaked in water with yeast for a couple of days. If you don't have yeast use the cheapest beer you can find

My favorite is just the off brand of Wylers presweetened drink mix, strawberry seem to work best. I just sprinkle it around the mud in the rooting areas. They will tear up the area and actually eat the mud. Cheaper than Hog Wild and easier to carry than a bag of corn.

Most of it. If you put the right amount then yes it will soak pretty much all of it up. You want enough liquid to completely cover the corn and about a half inch extra. If I'm using beer then I pour beer over first then water to make sure the beer get around and starts soaking in first.

I put about 4 gallons of corn in a 5 gallon bucket, fill with water almost to the top. The next day, most all the water is gone, I'll refill add my yeast and strawberry jello mix. After about 3-4 days in the garage, fermentation starts(bubbles like a carbonated drink.), then it needs to go outside.

Then the whole mess spills in your vehicle on your way to the lease... ...and when you get pulled over the officer wants to know how much you've had to drink.... I tried the corn/water/beer/Kool-Aid crap ONCE......ONCE.......(line from Johnny Dangerously)...and went back to plain corn...

Then the whole mess spills in your vehicle on your way to the lease... Set the bucket down inside of a lawn/leaf bag and put tape around the opening to close it up. It's more of a slurry than corn swimming in water, so there's very little mess, even riding on the trailer for 2 hours. Charlie

I used to be a big believer in soured corn. I would have anywhere from 5 to 15 5 gallon buckets souring on my patio at all times running traps on different properties. Pretty much tried every additive known to man. I learned that regular ol' corn (not apple scented) works best. The key is to feed regularly, with plain corn. Every time someone goes to the ranch/or lease. FEED THE TRAPS!! Keep them tied open and feed them regularly.

Charlie Like Skinnerback, I have tried all sorts of magic combinations of soured corn. It is just a hassle from start to finish and you make an excellent point - special transportation considerations - and the silly thing is, it really doesn't work any better. Yeah sure, the hogs will eat it, but the goal isn't to find something they will eat, but something that truly will bring hogs in better and if you don't already have hogs, these special baits just aren't going to make them appear. If they really worked, we would all be using them all the time.

Just to chime in, to me it's more important to find something that the pigs will eat but everything else won't!

Just to chime in, to me it's more important to find something that the pigs will eat but everything else won't! If there is any advantage to sour corn, this perhaps is it. Everything in the forest eats corn, and the deer and raccoons seem to find it first. My personal belief is that the hogs don't particularly like sour corn and much as plain corn, but they will eat it and many other creatures won't. But, for me, it's simpler to just put out more corn or run a feeder than to deal with the mess of fermenting corn. I have been known to throw out a package of Jello powder on top of the corn now and then, though. Can't really say if it helps, although once we used it to catch a large (295 Lb.) boar that previously wouldn't enter a trap. --

buckets full of uneaten leftover or expired restaurant food. expired meat/seafood from the grocery store. expired bakery products from the store... if you can get any free without dumpster diving that is. helps if you work in the industry or have close friends/family in the industry...

We use two packets of jello, 4-6 cups of sugar, and water over the corn and mix it up. The corn will absorb quite a bit of it. Before using this method, we just used corn. The plain corn in the feeder didn't bring them in as quick. There was also a few nights the corn would go untouched. I have yet to see or hear of the jello and sugar version going untouched. I will be checking the traps today around 3 p.m.. I bet I have a piggie or 6. Tonight I'll be trying fermented corn with lots of apples in it. The apples were free. We also have two traps side by side. Maybe I'll put fermented corn in one and fresh jello and sugar corn in the other to see what the outcome is. I bet both traps end up with pigs Anyone need a new/used ice chest?

I did take the time to cut it and for the first time, my traps were empty for two days! Guess I shouldn't have jinxed myself. Saw 20+ pigs but none in the trap. Guess they were still frightened from getting caught and slaughtered the week before. Lots of tiny piglets running all over right now.

So when the miracle bait doesn't work, we attribute the failure to some form of supernatural jinxing, LOL. That seems par for the course.

Corn as others have said. Also put some "hog wild" attractant in with it. Never used corn alone so I can't say if it works without it but they dang sure come on a rope when we use both. Trapped 26 hogs in 3 days total trapping.
