I know someone that owns one, and I did a lot of research before I bought one. To think that someone has to own something to see what it can and can't do is ridiculous. I think you know that. Everyone else does.
I wasn't picking on your beloved 6.8. I simply provided my opinion of the difference in the two. My beloved 6.8, very funny. I don't think their is any material difference between the two. Everything I've posted has said that. I think the 6.8 VS Grendel debate laughable. Then why did you start the debate?

There's not really enough difference between the two to fret over which one has better ballistics. That leaves only availability differences and the 6.8 is far better.
My 6.8 takes down animals just as good as my friend's 6.5 G.

6.8 tends to do better in the shorter barrel
the 6.5 is designed for long barrel and longer ranges than 300

The whole thread is a debate or did you miss the part where the OP is trying to decide what to get for hunting within 250 yards? I've stated numerous times it doesn't matter in those parameters but you seem to get butt hurt about that opinion.

I never got butt hurt. That was you when you thought I had picked on your favorite cartridge.
He asked for the difference. He didn't ask for a debate. You turned it into that.
I stated a couple facts about the cartridge. That's all. Why does that upset you so much?

We are actually in agreement as far as the cartridges go and what was stated about them. So I can think of no other reason for you to be so wound up about it.
If you are just looking for a pointless argument, then you'll have to find someone else. I don't have much interest in it, these days. I just like to discuss guns and hunting, which is all I tried to do here. Have a lovely day.

I doubt I could hit anything at 300 yards anyway, and wouldn't even Attempt a game shot that far.
With the right scope, 300 yards is a chip shot. And it does not have to be high magnification, it just needs certain features. Between the two, I would pick 6.5 Grendel. I am a sucker for BC which yields more retained velocity down range and therefore more energy delivery. Not to mention less wind drift. I have no doubt I could hand load for each cartridge and make either one do what I wanted it to do, but I'my 6.5 mm lover. Plus a trash talked of .277" because it ruffles feathers.

If you really want to get into medium-long range target shooting, medium-long range varminting and maybe reloading as well as deer hunting, the 6.5 Grendel makes a compelling argument for itself. No reason not to choose the Grendel if you want to take the hobby in that direction. And believe me all those things add to the fun. But I'd get at least a 20" if you'll have just one and that can get heavy so I would stay away from bull barrels too.

I think you have already made your decision. The 6.5G requires a longer barrel while the 6.8 requires a shorter barrel. Since this is a hunting weapon I cant see any hunting situation where a longer barrel is more beneficial. Be it sitting in a blind or stalking. The shorter barrel offers every advantage needed. Probably what you dont like about your 270 also. Its big and lunky.
Like you I have gone through this same thought process and although I would prefer the ballistics of the 6.5 I just dont see myself carrying anything but a 16 barrel when hunting with an AR.
I also have a 20 inch 30-06 which is ideal for manipulating in stands and quick to target. Short barrels rule!
GO TRUMP!

All this 6.5 Grendel requiring a longer barrel than the 6.8 is an old myth. Look at the Hornady data I posted earlier in this thread. The 6.8 starts a little faster but at 200 yards they are basically equal. Beyond that advantage 6.5, BC matters. Hornady data in 16 inch barrel.

If that's still the case, the Grendel makes even more sense.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

I called Alexander arms years ago, and by chance Bill himself answered. I told him I'm a 6.5 fan and like to hunt with non-standard rounds. I also have one of his early rifles in .50 Beowulf. I told him I wanted a nice hunting rifle, that I hunted under 200 yards. He quickly told me a 16" would work great for my needs, and it will punch paper very well out to 500 yards. His quote to me was BC is your friend! I have went on several Texas "drawing" hunts with those 2 rifles. Beowulf is zeroed at 100, and the Grendel is +1 at 100, neither has failed me yet. AND for the haters my 300 Black Out SBR with my Coastal can has take several pigs, without any failures.
