Go to the Cabela's in Buda and look through some different scopes. Or any store in Austin that has a good selection. For $300.00 a VX-2 3-9x40 is a lot of scope. For $25.00 more you can get the Meopta Meopro 3.5-10x44 from Cameraland. The Cabela's Euro Instinct scope has the same glass I think as the Meopro so you could look through one of those.
If you purchase from Cameraland you won't pay tax or shipping. As mentioned above you can ask for Doug or Rick. Another person you can deal with is Doug's assistant Neil. He is a great guy.

Use the 270. Using a 6" target zero at 267 yards or 2.5 in high at 100. It will give you a mpbr of 314 yards. That's using a muzzle velocity of 3200 and a bc of .46.

Nice guns, and obviously well kept and representative of years past...from about the time I started hunting in the late 1960's
IMO If you choose to use the Wby, I'd 1. pull the Burris off of it and send it to the CS desk at the factory in Colorado, for a checkup, as it has lifetime warranty & let them decide it it meets specs still, or needs a rehab or replacement. Burris FF II's are still made (in the Philippines and not in Greely CO anymore) and are good buys comparable quality wise to some of the low/mid grade Leo's. I've shot Burris FF II's for 20+ years and never had one fail. and their CS in Greely is not hard to live wirth either, doing free checkups on stuff I'd traded into.
Sent an e-mail to Burris today with description of the scope and pictures. It's 1970s vintage same as the rifle. Still has original sticker on the eye side of the scope it says: Burris Fullfield Wide Angle HiLume Lenses 100% USA Made If they are going to work it or replace it I may pay extra for an upgraded scope or replacing the reticle in this one.

Would 20x be too much on a variable magnification scope? I sent my fixed 6x in to Burris and if they are going to replace it I will ask if I can pay to upgrade to something like this. 6.5-20x50 http://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes/fullf...ope-6.5-20x50mmThey also have a 4.5-14x but it does not have windage marks on the reticle. With the higher magnification I could just leave it dialed at 9x for hunting and adjust zero for longer range when I want the 20x

Got my Burris 6x scope back from Burris warranty service.
They replaced the objective lens and put it back together and tested it. I did not get an option to upgrade the reticle.
I'm very happy with the service but afraid this scope may not be suited for the hunting I am going to do and will still need to replace it.
