I had a customer make a horrible shot on a blackbuck in mid-October. He shot one of his legs, just at the knee. The lower portion was being held on by only a strip of hide.

I did not know about this until a few weeks later. The bb was getting around okay, eating corn and could even trot off. I stalked up on him within 20 yards in mid-November and could see that his leg above the wound was swollen and appeared infected. I had some hunters coming a few days later and hoped one of them could get on him. Well neither of them did and we went in to the one cold snap around Thanksgiving and I worried that the bb would not survive. We were back out on the first Monday of December and found him dead.

I figure that whitetail are a little tougher than bb with surviving the cold weather, but this front coming through will be a tough test on him.

Good luck with him, but I would be hunting him.

We learned in a thread a few weeks ago that alot of people would have shot him, and let him lay.

Bummer man. Pick and choose your battles and I envy the fact that you have a "free" lease. I suppose nothing is really free. In your case the headache of trying to do it right is what you are paying. If you need a guest, let me know!

Even if that up being what I decided I needed to do there is absolutely no way I would just let him lay. I would tag it with one of my own tags and not even question it and I would skin him out and querter him and take him to the house to decide what is good and what is not that could still be safely consumed.

You're in a tough spot. From my experience, the guys furnishing the money usually don't think the guy doing the work has much say and can get pissy if he does say much. That goes for a lot more than just deer hunting.
