why do hunters shoot 1.5 year old spikes.
i think its kinda dumb shooting them when there that young.
i mean come on, where there is a bad year of rain do you see more bigger bucks than of a year with a good sping. No.. all i am saying is that if you dont give them time to mature you dont know what you will have in a few years, just because a spike is a spike for a year dosent mean its going to stay a spike for its whole life.
ps any deer that is mature that is not what hunters consider a trophy i would take out in a heartbeat.

More and more people are starting to see the light!

I remember right after I joined this site I tried telling people this stuff based on Dr. Krolls study, and people thought I was just as big of a nut as Dr. Kroll!!!

have you ever seen a large population of old spikes 4.5 + years of age. nope
its kinda funny every year if its a good rain year you dont see that many spikes but if the rain was low you see a crap load of them.
if you let them grow they will be big

I agree!

In 2007 our lease had a ton of rain, and as a result I bet I did not see three different spike all year!

In 2008 our lease had VERY LITTLE rain, and we had spikes running everywhere!

I can count on one hand how many MATURE spikes and three points I have seen in my entire life!

Yup! And if they shoot every spike they see then they could take out as much as 60% of that age class of deer too!

Thats why I hate the TP&W antler restrictions they currently have in place! There is just way to many varibles to be shooting bucks based on whats on their head!

yea but not if you are trying to grow large bucks. if you dont care what you shoot the go pop anything you want its your decision. i am talking about the hunters that think they are doing good by shoot young deer, not the hunters that will shoot anything thinking there going to get the money back through meat. pm they are good to eat.

Young spikes make some darn good eating. I've always heard a yearling spike will never be a monster buck! My question is when you shoot your monster buck do you just cut off it's head or donate the meat? If they where cows you would be eating an old bull and the spike would be veal.

i will only eat 1 deer at most, so im not to big shooting a ton of deer. with the price of deer hunting you could eat ribeye everyday insted of hunting. you cant tell the diffence in a young spike or a old buck if there made into sauage. again i am not talking about evey hunter only the ones that think they are managing there deer herd buy shooting young spikes

Well since I hunt in my back yard, my only expense is corn, and stand up keep. I want to see anyone eat ribeyes every day for about 100 dollars a month. That is what I figure I pay for corn.

back to the subject.... Its really dumb to shoot spikes if your trying to manage and grow big bucks I work on a high fenced ranch where the guy tagged 12 spikes 2 years ago all were 1.5 year old and this year 8 of the bucks are 10 points and 3 are 8 points and 1 is a 6 point. He has a 1000acre pen so he knows his deer and has kept track of them ever since.

I use a stick. J/K. I have plenty rifles, but only one I use for hunting and I have had it for about 10 years now. I reload my own ammo, and have enough supplies for the rest of my life. My point is even if I didn't hunt I would still have guns and ammo. I use way more ammo just messing around than I do hunting. I have never had to shoot an animal more than once, so even if it was 2 bucks a round that is cheap.

I hunt state land @ 48$, not allowed to bait, that just leaves gas & ammo. I figure time and money as recrecreation. My wife works at albertsons and gets good deals on ribeye 2-4$ per steak (aged) but it just something about something you killed and butchered that makes it taste better and I prefer venision.

But I thought a spike will never be a monster "trophy" buck anyways, yes some day he will make a 6 or 8 point, but never a 10. So isn't that a management buck just taken out earily? Actually isn't the management just making the deer more expensive? That isn't really a question it's a fact. I've heard of people that managed their lease until the couldn't afford it, the trophies on it were worth more then the were paying.

Thanks, my place is small but it is what I can afford. I am hoping to get a bigger place eventually.Just got to save money and make it happen.

Back on topic, I only shoot spikes if they are over 1.5 years old. The one I shot this year was at least 2.5. I had seen him on cam and was hunting for him.
