Ar 10, I have owned several 308 "battle rifles" Generally the AR 10 works well out of the box. I was happy to get my $ back on my "tuned" M1A, I had big $ in it! Built a nice 18" AR 10, ready for some cooler weather! FYI I can build almost 3 AR 10s for what I got for my M1A.

I would love to attempt an AR-10 build worry about the differences in parts
I would also love something that will chew through different types of ammo

I'm sure many of heard of the YouTube channel 8541 tactical. He ran a series of videos where he builds a higher end, custom ar10 in 6.5 creedmoor. The whole playlist can be rather winded and long but he does go through the whole build in detail and examples along the way the differences between the ar 15 and 10 based platforms and what the watch out for. There a certainly other resources. This is just the one that comes to mind. http://youtu.be/hyiIJxXgDG0

The M1A needs to be redesigned for a modern, rational bedding system. Other than that, it's just fine.
Though I am no fan of AR's, that's what I would choose from the platforms mentioned.
Kind regards, charlesb

When someone says "best", it's hard to know what each person's "best" means. If accuracy is the goal, the "best" I have seen is Armalite AR-10T. Everyone I have shot has been a hammer. Easy half moa with a tuned load.

I have only had experience with one AR-10 and three "clones". The Armalite was a fine rifle; but I bought it used and had a chance to flip it a year later for a substantial profit. Two things that I didn't like about it was the proprietary magazines and the weight, as mine had a bull barrel. My next rifle was a DPMS Recon .308. By all accounts, I should have held on to that rifle. It was almost perfect, but Wal-Mart was closing out the Sig 716 Patrol for half price. I thought it was an upgrade; it wasn't. The Sig was quite a bit heavier and never did shoot MOA with 168gr Match King. When the S&W M&P 10 was being sold for $999, I jumped on the Smith and sold off the Sig. I haven't found anything about the Big Smith I don't like yet; and that is after about 400 rounds. The only modification I want to make to the M&P 10 is to change the factory hand guard for a free-float with low-profile gas block.

If ar10 factory lwrc, lmt, or pof for top tier. The psa is a great gun without the high dollar price tag, but not in the same class as top tier listed. Building a high quality is doable for 1200-1500. For non ar based platform im sols on fnar with hunting stock instead of pistol grip which is an additional $108. I have had a lot of trigger time with the m1a socom ii and scout. Aside from it being iconic the fnar beats it in most categories. Fnar comes with 1" guarantee at 100yds or theyll replace it. The downside is field stripping the fnar its a task. If this isnt a "battle rifle" id go fnar with hunting stock everyday. Keep in mind its based off the browning bar action and that is hands down the best and most proven traditional semi auto hunting rifle in the world.

For a "battle rifle" I am interested in the PTR 91 series for the fact they supposedly use anything you put in like an AK will

Easy half moa with a tuned load. Couldn't agree more on that.. Here's my Armalite AR-10T chambered in Rem 260.. Accurate is an understatement. With Daytime scope.

The M1A is beautiful and sexy and will run and shoot no matter what in almost any conditions. So for reliability it is the M1A. (Unless you buy a springfield and dont change the bolt guts).
Best is such a general term. In a war I would want the M14 for sure. No AR10 is going to stand up to that abuse. For accuracy the AR10 has an edge on the M1A. But again best is a general term.
I dont like to hunt with my M1A because it doesnt have the accuracy of a bolt gun.
But if money were no object and I was going to buy a semi 308 right now it would probably be a Les Baer or Wilson Combat AR10.

I like and have them all (2 M1A's, an AR10, and a SAR-8). If I had to go with only one, it would probably be the pre-ban M1A which has everything on that gun USGI with the exception of the receiver. They just don't make them like that anymore. It isn't the lightest or most practical of the bunch (The AR10 DEF10 would fit that bill followed by the early SOCOM 16 M1A) but its the finest of the bunch to hold and shoot.

I'd have to say the Ruger SR762. Piston gun, very clean, adjustable gas valve for different ammo, and very, very accurate. Haven't had anyone who hasn't enjoyed shooting mine.

Im old school. How bout a nice BAR in 308. Not a battle rifle but defiantly a good rifle. Also a good looking rifle with all the wood and blued steel etc.
It ain't easy being me.

I'd go with the BAR too, but the OP wanted something 'tactical'.
