I just lost my Jr hunter black lab male and I will tell you I will probably buy a female next time.
Those males are stubborn SOB's.
There is something about a male bird dog though.
I have a great friend that literally has 4-5 master hunters in his kennel, not professional but retired and a great dog trainer... He has trained females for years and years if that means anything. He likes the trainability of the females and wont add a male.
Could he train the male, heck yes but he likes the females.

I've always liked the males. Nothing hard headed about them. As a matter of fact I found them more accommodating and biddable then the moody independent females. But having said that I've had some great females. Males just tug on my heart strings a little more.
Males won't piss on everything if you train them not too... ;-)

I've never had a real hunting dog... But in my healers I ALWAYS get females and prefer the runt if I can. Females always seem to be much calmer and don't walk around peeing on everything!
You can run but you can't hide...

I have both. Female pees constantly. Male is very calm and easy to train. Had all kinds in either sex. Each dog is different. Let the dog pick you.

I've had both and currently have a female mostly because I wanted a smaller dog for inside. My next one will be a male just because its easier to keep them from getting pregnant.

Females typically don't have an attitude and if they're brought up around other dogs are fine. Males typically can have a problem with other dogs, but if you get a Lab or Golden you're probably not looking at a problem there. Marking could be a problem, though. Some dogs just want to mark everything. If you get the dog fixed at a young age you'll not have any problem at all in any direction.
