What would we be trying to learn (especially) in AR counties? If it is the size of the racks taken, then a call-in system should be fine.

For one thing, it would get those folks in trouble who shot a buck with a less than 13" wide rack, whether they shot it intentionally or by accident.

If it were a call-in system, then they could just say it was 13". The state might know that some of these 13"ers were not really quite 13", but at least they'd have a record of the kill. With a check-station, these deer wouldn't be brought in.

I know they wouldn't bring some in...but then they are making themselves unethical and criminal. There are a few unscrupulous individuals cheating now, taking shots at deer that are "close" then measuring. I don't think the check stations would increase that, maybe decrease it.
I personally always want less involvement from government.
We are not getting it now.
So, the check stations are the BEST way to get accurate harvest data.
Voluntary call ins, reporting at license time, etc....would not be any more accurate than strolling into a processor and extrapolating data from that to the whole state.
They are current regulating your deer harvest based on 4 year old poorly acquired weak data from a few counties in East Texas, 600 miles away in Foard/Wilbarger counties...
Surely, surely, there's a better way.
I could go for self reporting...IF there was some training and there is a check system where they audit a few, like when you call in, they tell every 10th caller, to take the deer to the check station. That will keep self reporters honest.

And your point is what? That should be passed over or allowed. Everyone has a choice to pull the trigger or release an arrow, or what for a better look at the buck if there's any question whether it's a 13" or wider inside spread.
There are Pro's & Con's for check stations and distance is probably one of the biggest negatives out there or that persons home, processing facility is closer than the check station.
One mentioned who would pay for the check stations to be operated or someone always there. It is part of the wildlife biologist weekly/monthly duties and they do get volunteers to assist like many landowners within county wildlife management associations.

Wow, resurrection at it's best!
I still think it would be better info than the voodoo magic beans used today!
