I've got this deer shown on the right. Posted a picture early season and there was pretty good debate whether he was just injured or if he was a true CULL. Well the deer he is pictured with I feel like is Kin to him as you can see the single antler on the younger buck.

The buck I shot this year was very much a cull and looked to have the same trend on one side of his antlers.

Now the problem is we are in a one buck county and if this deer is spreading the genetics we need to clear it out, but its tough in a one buck country not to at least think your after a trophy buck.

So is there anyway to get a specific cull tag or an extra tag to remove such a deer to better the overall genetics of the area?

Maybe just tell the game warden the deer is rabid?

NO, and when the AR's are put into effect in your county, that is what is going to be doing the breeding.

I am not trying to or meaning to offend you are anyone else, but that picture is a classic example of why the AR's are not going to achieve the desired results in the long run. JMO.

I would first contact a TPWD biologist who is assigned to your area and see if he/she will give you a "management" tag. If that gets you nowhere, contact your local game warden and ask for his guidance. While he probably won't give you a tag, he might take the approach that it was a harvest that he "had no knowledge".

Bring a kid to shoot it. It'll be a trophy to a kid.

I second the notion on the bring someone to take the deer.

He's an old wise deer. He came to the feeder the morning before the season and then less than a week after. Never once came during the season even during the 3 weeks we didn't venture out. He needed to be culled years ago.

Dan, TP&W just does not do that kind of thing.

I am not sure where you come up with some of the stuff you come up with, maybe from your experiences in Mississippi, but TP&W Game Wardens or Biologists don't just hand out special tags to allow the killing of a particular deer because a hunter thinks it is a cull.

Ditto on the kid thing...shouldn't be hard even put an add in the Thrifty nickel saying you've got a cull buck for a nice youngster to shoot.

Take the buck yourself, stop the genetic strain there, or have a friend, youth or someone who hasn't ever taken a buck come out and take it.

As Randall mentioned, our wildlife biologists do not issue cull buck tags. What county?

If you're looking for trophies, you have to cull the bad bucks which is part of management of the herd in the first place.

Or get in the MLD program

It was a suggestion from a TPWD officer.

Damn Vernon, I think you are right, and that right there is a reason TP&W will not issue a stinking "Cull Tag" I believe that deer is 13 or over, "It Just Ain't A Trophy", so no one wants to "Waste" their precious "Trophy Tag" on it.

I believe that deer is a legal buck in an AR county, it is 13 or over and is branch antlered.

I too think he's legal in an AR county and I would be glad to "waste" my tag on him! Funny, my hunting licence never came with a trophy tag...

You're missing the point. It's not about the need for a tag but a decision by the officer if he/she decides to give you a citation for a mature buck with a tall rack that doesn't meet the 13-inch minimum.

It's just like being caught speeding. Just because you get stopped going over the limit, it's up to the officer to decide if he/she wants to issue you a citation for it.

If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to call the officer who works our area and discuss the matter.

Not with Game laws, it does not work the same way as TxDOT.

Go up and read Kyotee1's response Dan, the man works for TP&W.

If the deer is done dead, then the GW has some lee way on how to handle it, but for a live deer, there ain't no Texas GW gonna issue a "Cull Tag".

Let me say again, forget about a need for a tag. I've seen officers refuse to give someone a citation for using the wrong tag, or not marking their license correctly. They did so as a measure of "good faith". Common sense dictates the same effort may apply when they come across someone who has shot a mature buck that doesn't meet the "spirit" of the protection that was intended with the 13-inch rule.

I am thru dealing with you on this, just go out there and shoot a deer that does not meet the AR's and explain to the GW why he should not give you a ticket because it was a cull in your opinion.

ok, there are three ways to handle it...

1. take a photo to the game warden in the area and just ask. Being over 13" wide, you shouldn't get in trouble....

2. A hammer is a valuable tool....put it to use, get it to pass as a spike.

3. Poor shot placement.

????Que????

Why take a photo to the GW if you can visibly tell that the animal meets or exceeds the AR requirements????

That would be a case of trying to get an extra tag so that you don't have to use your Trophy Tag, because you can't use your spike tag, and I would not rely on the hammer thingy working either. JMO.

I just think it's 13+ wide looking at it.

As for the tag, there's no differece, aBUCK is a deer with a hardened antler protruding form the skin, period. That's a buck. Only difference in AR counties is the log on your license.

If anyone has a "CULL" or "management" tag I'd like to see it.

That's the same crap I hear about once a month some feller saying he's got a license from the sheriff that he can carry a gun and not go to jail....where's the little guy with the flag, never can find him...
