Just got my IR Hunter Mark II in the mail today! What is the best/easiest way to sight it in?

You can use metalized tape, Chem warmer, or even a steel target.

Disposable Hand Warmer packet.

I use the small hand warmers...

The hand warmers are the easiest and last the longest. I have used this method twice. I have also used a rock placed on the edge of a fire pit to heat the rock up, and then tape it to the target. I also know of shooters who used a simple propane torch to heat up a piece of metal or rock. Anything with a heat source will work.

Also, start out at 25 yards and get it within an inch, and move out to 50, then 100. If you start at 100, you can easily be way off the paper and wasting rounds. Know your trajectory of the round and your scope height so you can calculate where the bullet should hit at each distance for the zero you want to use.

How long did you wait on delivery if you don't mind me asking?
I visited a few sites, all said "out of stock" for the IR Hunter MK 2, 2.5 X 35mm.
I ordered from TNVC last Friday and they stated two months for delivery.
That's a long time to wait.

Ordered mine from Ultimate Night Vision....Tyler is on this forum, I think his username is Bearclaw. Ordered on 3/26, was delivered on 4/10.

Also, forgot to mention, he shipped it to my Dad's in Arkansas so I could avoid the sales tax which saved me over $500!

Nothing special about the FLIR sight-in. I wouldn't bother taping the hand warmer to the back of the target. Just staple it to a white piece of paper and save the money. Also, they are using a bit of video trickery. Notice that it shows him shooting like the video is of his shot, but no recorder is plugged into the video out.

The IR Defense MK II offers a much better sight image than the FLIR too. Look at both and you will see. No brainer.

I don't see what is so expensive about stapling it to the back of the target..
Don't think it really matters one way or the other.

I am not buying the FLIR, it's coming in for review for a few months.

Using a simple hand warmer with two pieces of duct tape is a no brainer, cheap and super easy!


I taped a bulls eye underneath the hand warmer too just for grins!






Took all of about five minutes to sight it in painlessly at 100 yards with the hand warmer and duct tape.





Saved the X,Y coordinates for this particular rifle under User PreSet #1, so I can switch the FLIR Thermal back and forth between a number of different rifles.




Then, after dark, it took another five minutes to put some bacon down:

There is no need to use a target when sighting in a thermal scope. Targets cost more money than a piece of copy paper. He makes a big deal out of making sure you center the hand warmer over the center of the target when you tape it on the back side. Why? You can't see the target to aim at it. You will be seeing the heat of the hand warmer.

Save the targets for digital night vision or day scopes.

Not a problem, not a big issue at all like you've described, the target was already there and it was a free gift from a friend.


Could have easily used a magic marker and a piece of paper and made my own target on site, but it was just too easy to use my friends nice free target instead of walking all the way back into the barn for a magic marker.

Yeah, it doesn't matter to me either, but apparently it does for some people.

Are we really worried about the cost of a target when talking about Thermal scopes?

Yeah, not needed I guess, in fact, a big piece of cardboard that you got free and tape a handwarmer to it.

I will use my spotting scope with a mil reticle to measure the corrections needed.

I tape a lit cigarette to thin sheet metal and it works great for me. You could probably just put foil behind it if you're using card board..

I have a question for the experienced thermal scope users.
I've forgotten more about AR's and terminology over the years
as my old brain drains. I have a variety of flat tops in 223/556,
a trusty crusty Armalite AR-10 in 308, and a few 6.8 uppers
all with the A2? front site. The front sight that sticks up with
the post in it you rotate to raise or lower. Will a thermal sight
still function correctly with that iron in front of it?

I haven't tried one that way because I don't have sights like that, but my guess is that it would work fine.

yep, I just boresighted the FLIR this morning.

I see people chasing bullet holes all over a target when all they really need to do is what was shown in this video.

You may have some issues with this. I have a troy flip down front sight on one of my rifles using a FLIR thermosight and if I have the rifle in the warm truck driving around, then get out and look through the scope, even though the sight is at the bottom of the sight picture it causes the whole picture to go white. The scope picks up the heat from the sight and everything gets washed out. I had to remove the sight completely on that rifle to prevent that from happening.

Makes sense, never thought about as concerns the sun on it during the day.
