Saturday we were out checking out a new deer lease in Eastland County and got down into some mesquite flats with gas pipeline right away going thru the area, and saw something moving in one of the clearings 75-100 yd away looked to be approx. 3ft tall or better. Looked again and it was the biggest jack rabbit I have ever seen 20-25lb. I see jack rabbits almost every day on the airport I work at and they are cotton tail size compared to this one I saw. Just how big can jack rabbits get ? went searching on the internet and found this clipping out of a Odessa newspaper from back in the 50's . the one I saw was not as big as the Odessa picture but maybe along the lines of what this guy has

Was alcohol involved prior to this sighting?

I'm still trying to figure out how to get our jackalopes to grow more than 4 points

Was alcohol involved prior to this sighting? I am not kidding I was on my best behavior as I was getting ready to spend over 4K on 2 hunting spots on this lease. There were 4 or 5 other people with us at the time. I have see & hunted some big swamp rabbits and have lived & hunted in Texas for most of my life & this is by far the biggest Jack ever. Looked like a small Kangaroo, hell it may have been one as there is a high fence exotic ranch on one of the lease boundaries.

I would think a huge Texas Jackrabbit would be 5-6 lbs or so at best.

I would think a huge Texas Jackrabbit would be 5-6 lbs or so at best. that's being generous. I've seen thousands as I'm sure you have and have never seen one that I would have guessed went 5-6 lbs. they are all about the same size more or less from what I've seen height wise. I'm sure if you could find an overweight one he might push the envelope

I willing to bet that a picture of a European hare. European hares can hit 16 lbs and their first cousin the white tailed jackrabbit can hit 20. The black tailed jack rabbit tops out a 6 lbs, another difference, both the white tailed jack rabbit and European hare are edible. I don't ever want to be hungry enough to be looking at a black tailed jack as food.

With the rain that we have had up on the rolling plains the jacks are larger tan average this year. We have seen any records, but still pretty good sized ones.

You didn't happen to be looking at property of highway 571 were you? I was on a lease there a few years ago and we had a kangaroo on the property. It escaped a high fenced ranch after it burned.

I'll see fifty to 60 Jackrabbits today just like I do everyday and you ain't going to see 20 to 30 pound Jack's. I've never seen one that will get close to 10lb. The one in the pic is just an average size 5 to 7 lb Jack, he's just posing TFF style.

This story reminds me of the old western cartoon about a dude ranch. A group of city boys were gathered around a fireplace in the main house , one of them gesturing with his arms outstretched and telling the rest a story with much excitement on his face. Two cowhands that worked on the ranch were off on the side and one of them tells the other cowhand this.." Jes, you better go and check on the mules....that city fellar just claims he shot the biggest jack rabbit he EVER saw..."....

are you sure you didnt see the Easter bunny you know I think you hit the nail on the head , it probably was the Easter Bunny just getting a last snack before having to deliver all the eggs on Sunday. All I can say there were 4 other peeps there and all agreed it was a big [censored] rabbit. I see jack rabbits on the airport I work at on a daily basis and agree they are in the 5-6 lb range. this rabbit was easy twice the size of those so at the very least we are talking 10-12lb. That's my story and I am sticking too it. I joined that lease and will be looking for that rabbit just so I can truly see how big that critter is. hetman

To those that see black panthers, 200" deer everywhere, and 500 lb. hogs running around.....add 20-25 lb. rabbits to your list!

Back before the big drought of the 1920's the West Texas jackrabbits were a lot bigger. They had to be to survive, but now they are almost extinct. When the deer population dropped and the Depression hit the big jacks were shot for food purposes. It was so bad that even the Pecos Rodeo used the big jacks for bucking animals. These jacks could survive while horses and bulls couldn't live off of the little grass that as left.

Shot one 6 years ago that weighed 187 lbs. It was chewing on a pit bull dogs torso when I snuck up on him

Rascals can be dangerous. Several years ago I was walking over some bare dry hard pan kinda keeping an eye out for rattle snakes mostly at a reasonable distance. One had made him a depression in the ground and was laying in it pretty much level with it. When I saw him it was just as he leaped straight at my groin. All I saw coming was hair and bunny teeth coming fast before I managed to barely dodge him. He left some hair on my hip. I thought afterwards how I would of explained any injuries should he of hit my privates. Not sure being near neutered by a flying jack was a normal injury er docs saw very often Thought I would of just lied and said a mule kicked me.
