Heck, a 30-30 firing Remington soft point ammo will drop an elk within that caliber's effective range by a confident and competent shooter. Just not an ideal caliber.

I use a .270 for most everything with a 130 grain Core-Lokt. For elk I would move to a 150 grain Core-Lokt and not even worry about it, provided it was a high % shot within 300 yards. That is my particular comfort zone.

Scooter, of your going to use an 11 degree drop, all you have to do is re-calculate the 3rd and 4th rows, no biggy, you got this.

Thank you sir, it was a hell of a hunt and my buddy and I damm near froze for 3 straight days before finding this bull alone in a small stand of Blue Spruce. The wind was so loud that he never heard us top the hill above him on mules. He ws in good shape and wasn't beat up like a lot of bulls get late in the season! Baker

Very true statement Dawaba. Here are a few more photos from that trip!!

Barnes used to make a 180 grain original bullet in 270 cal. I tried for a while to get my hands on a box, but they don't make them anymore.

Its probably about like shooting 200 grainers out of an '06.

Never saw those.

My .300 WSM likes 180 grain TSXs. Federal Premium was the only one that made them in factory loads (that I know of anyway). They discontinued them and went with the 165 grain only. I happened to read about it on here and (with a lot of searching) was able to scramble and find 5 boxes before they were all gone. Those will probably last me until I'm gone too.

If you shoot your .270 well and use a good bullet (and I would go 150gr), I don't think there's any reason not to use it.

I'm taking a trip to Montana for elk this year, first elk hunt. Planning on taking the 30.06 and .270. I'm comfortable with both and not worried about my shots out to 300-350 yards with either. I'll use 140 grain in the .270 and 180 in the 30.06.

150 NP will do its job just fine if you do yours.

The last elk I shot was a cow at about 175 yards with 270 shooting the federal blue box ammo with a 130gr bullet. The elk dropped in her tracks.

A buddy and myself went elk hunting last year and both of us carried our .25-06's shooting 117 grain sierra's. His elk ran about 75 yards and mine stumbled about 25 yards. .270 is plenty of rifle, just make sure you group good with the right bullets and know where to place a shot.

I "personally" don't think .270 is enough gun for elk but I would go with Nosler Accubond's. I have used them on Elk Oryx and Aoudad and they perform perfectly, good weight retention and quick kills.
