Is a 270 ok to hunt elk with and if so what grain bullet would you recommend? I have larger cailbur guns but my old faithful a 270 and it is what I am most comfortable with

Use which ever ammo that shoots the best in your particular rifle.

I would use a monometal bullet like the Barnes TSX or a bonded bullet like the Nosler Accubond. The Nosler Partition is also a good choice. There are many other choices but those are my favorites.

Is the 270 a acceptable caliber Yes it is, the bullets NP suggested above in the vitals there will be nothing left to do but take pictures and let the work begin. That is if you also follow Rifleman's advice.

.270 is plenty. Especially since you are comfortable with that rifle. Just hit him right and get your packing shoes on.

You might bump it up to a 150 grain. The Hornady inter lock is a good bullet.

Barnes TSX, Nosler Accubond, Nosler Partition, or Swift A-Frame. Personally, I'd probably go with a 140 gr. Barnes. first and a 150 gr. Nosler Partition second.

With a 150 grain bullet, it's a fine elk cartridge. Just use a tough bullet to penetrate.

270 is enough. As always, shot placement is key. Good luck!

Like already mentioned, shot placement is going to be critical with such a small caliber on such a large animal. How tight are your groups at 100 yards? How far out can you be sure to make a killing shot? you wont have any knock down power with that caliber, so if you use it, you will have to be perfectly accurate.
I deer hunt with a 30-06 and elk hunt with a 338. I've seen the difference in what more power gives you in tough hunting conditions. If you spend the money to go on the hunt, put in the effort to get to where the animals are at, then it really sucks to not take the shot because you don't have enough gun to put him down.

I have killed elk with 270 using 130 grain Hornady inter lock and never had a problem but I was hunting the combo season ( Deer and Elk ). If hunting elk only I would go to 150 grain. My gun grouped better with the 130 grain and as stated hit them in the bread basket.

It worked for Jack O'Connor back in the 50s and 60s, and it still kills elk today. JOC was famous for his use of the various 130-gr bullets, but he preferred the 150 NPT for elk and bigger animals. He once wrote that he'd killed 19 elk, but not all with the .270.

I would use a Barnes bullet, those things are tough.

More than enough gun. 150 grain Nosler would be a good choice.

You can't have it both ways. No, it's not. But if you don't understand the geometrically exponentional advantages of a 130-150 grain bullet over a 55-60 grain bullet by now, there's probably not much I can say to convince you. A few years ago, I would have said use a 150 grain bullet in the .270 for elk too. If using an AB I would go 140 or 150 in a NP. But I think the TSX or other good monometals are fine at 130 grain. Years ago that's all you could get in a .270 factory round. That may have changed. If so, I would go with the heavier bullet.

A 270 will kill an Elk all day long if your shot placement is true. There are better calibers for Elk that will give you a little more margin for error. I shoot a 300WM and use 180grain Barnes XXX bullets and this combination is lethal, but only if my shot is placed on the money. I've used it for years to give me more punch downrange if I need it. If you are comfortable shooting your 270 and can deliever your round in the kill zone then it's plenty. Good Luck with your choice!! Baker
