Elk are tough.... and as everyone has stated, shot placement is critical. I've used a 7mm Rem Mag shooting a 160 gr Nossler Partition and have not lost any...but shot placement is key and I have had the experiences of needing more than one shot as well as dropping them on the spot. Get only one lung and an elk will run a long way.

I shot a cow elk in the shoulder(scapula) with a 130 TTSX out of my 270 at 300 yards. It penetrated the bone clear to the opposite side. The elk ran 324 gps feet before dying. While not far, it was still tough to find in the oak brush in the dark.

I have been shooting a 270 for 40 years and have taken several elk. I think the Nosler 140 grain accubond is the best bullet as it has a better BC than the 150. I shot a good bull last year at 320 yards and it dropped in its tracks, folded like a pancake! Good shot placement is the key.

.270 is plenty. Especially since you are comfortable with that rifle. Just hit him right and get your packing shoes on. But NP. Isn't shooting an Elk with a 270 like shooting a Deer with a 223? You can't have it both ways. No, it's not. But if you don't understand the geometrically exponentional advantages of a 130-150 grain bullet over a 55-60 grain bullet by now, there's probably not much I can say to convince you. A few years ago, I would have said use a 150 grain bullet in the .270 for elk too. If using an AB I would go 140 or 150 in a NP. But I think the TSX or other good monometals are fine at 130 grain. Years ago that's all you could get in a .270 factory round. That may have changed. If so, I would go with the heavier bullet. You sure you don't work for the government? That has got to be one of the best answers that mean squat I have heard in a while.

its simple really So I can screw a .55 grain Hornaday into a Slick Heads Ear at 217 yards at 11 degrees of drop using this formula Buck Man that 6.5 is gonna be really off the charts then

I realize it's not as deep as pics of beer displays in the convenience store, but I do my best.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Formula indicates .223 is only effective behind HF bc it results in a derivative of PI and an infinite continuum. Translation - can shoot to infinity and they'll still be there from running in a circular perimeter.

All it means is a 150 grain bullet is much more effective than a 55 grain bullet, all else being equal (mainly speed and bullet construction). The relationship is not linear. Sorry for the big words.

so a 50 grain bullet is 3 times as effective as a 150 grain bullet.............gotcha. I'll run those mathematical numbers and post them up later I thought the picture would make it easier for people to understand.

I DO NOT know if a .270 is good round for elk or not. But this does sound like the makings of a good argument to buy a new rifle........justify it anyway you want. I LOVE DREAMING ABOUT NEW RIFLES!!!!!!!!!
