Look at his hands on the coyotes legs and where they are on the hunter's body...and the size of the legs...and if as you say "the head is way in front of the mans feet" that animal has got to have a really long body to stretch that far.

BuckRage,

I had to send the image from my cell to my daughters smartphone so she could send it to my PC.... so that could probably account for it saying "Questionable: Photo edited or resized with GD."

The fellows I got the picture from are not tech savvy enough to do a photoshop of a picture

whatever it is i'm glad we dont have them that size around here the cattle and the dogs would have a tough time surviving an attack from a couple of those even one that large could do them in

Yeah, the largest recorded yote in history was only like 73 lbs, so there's no way that's purebred.

Still badass song dog.

I went on the internet as well...a couple of reported 80 plus coyotes but all were in the Northeast....except for that 75 pounder killed in 1937 in Afton, Wyoming and as I stated earlier the Eastern Coyotes are coyotes x wolf hybrids.

Here is my question, why not DNA a hair sample ?

I have seen hybrids both dog and wolf, looks tend me to say wolf cross or genes.

No matter what, Amazing trophy, and congrats to the hunter.
Every one of us would love to have a chance at something like that, awesome.

Supposedly those "coyotes" that killed that pop singer awhile back were over 100 lbs and widely thought to be coy dogs as well.

Lonnie,
If it were me...I'd be doing DNA samples because I'd be curious. But I am not the hunter.

I did suggest that my taxidermist encourage the guy to do that..... my fear is that if it gets tanned there will be no way to DNA it. But the "good old boys" and they really are typically good guys despite the stereotype don't typically care nor do they want to get Fish & Game involved as there is a concern that once you contact them they look for ways to "find something wrong" or try and confiscate what you have.

My buddy DNA tested his dog because he bought it off of Craigslist. The whole process was pretty crazy, and it's not a quick turnaround either. It took about 1 month to get the results back from the lab.

The price for his dog's test was $350, but it was a quality test with recommended doctors, good lab, etc. I believe it's worth it if you're seriously interested in the species of the animal, hybrid or not.

Secondly, if it can't identify what it is if it's a hybrid fully, it'll give you percentages on what it's mixed with. There will be a list of 5 and it'll have a percent chance of it being in your animal's blood.

I did have one on my trail camera that I posted that looks pretty big, but not as big as the one in the picture on this post.

They also said that any coyote x dog hybrids would have a tough time surviving since dogs would not tend a den like a coyote so the young would likely not survive.

I know they have red wolves in parts of the Carolinas and my first thought was maybe it's a red wolf because of the coloring. That said, my taxidermist said his brother (the trapper) catches a lot of coyotes this color.

So all I know is that the hunter is holding that coyote pretty close to his body and it looks huge to me.

After seeing that photo I believe it. This is a wolf and looks about the same size.

Colt45,
You are wrong they have Wolf DNA pretty well documented. There may be an occasional coy-dog, but the Researchers have done extensive DNA studies showing that coyotes that migrated east apparently breed with the wolves in the great lakes area in the north and with red wolves in the south.

As for coy-dogs, they are not all that common because typically it a male dog who breeds with a female coyote and male dogs (unlike male coyotes) will not stay with the females and car for pups in the den..so the survival rate of the pups is very low.

iliketohunt,

I'll tell you the same thing I told indianapigsticker. Go back to your High School math and right triangle. Pythagoras's theorem states that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

So look at where this animals feet are relative to the man..and you can see he is pulling the feet close to his chest. He's leaning from the weight and the feet are at least shoulder high. I am a relatively short guy on me that distance is about 60 inches.

So how far do you want the head to be from his feet? You guys say "way in front" is that 3 ft..I mean a foot in front isn't really far. So if the guys shoulder is at 60 inches (for all I know this guy may be over 6 ft) and the head of the "coyote" is 36" in front ...then the length of the hypotenuse is 70 inches...but you need to allow for the coyotes nose not being on the ground... so even if you deduct a foot or 12 inches you still have about 58 inches of body length. This is not scientific, but this indicates that this is one big coyote or coyote-wolf hybrid.

BTW, there is an effort going on to get a tissue sample of the animal DNA'ed to see if it's a wild coyote-wolf or someone's escaped people bred wolf-dog ......we are in the process of getting in contact with a lab that participated in a DNA study on Eastern coyotes in conjunction with the Smithsonian (they have all the DNA data bases for various wolf species and coyotes). As an aside, that study showed that the Eastern Coyotes in VA have coyote and Great Lakes Wolf DNA which explains the larger size of all Eastern Coyotes compared to pure coyotes like you have in Texas and most of the western states.
