I don't know about the two-wheel-drive pickup, but the last one really was a guy from Dallas down hunting the coast. (Read to the bottom)

Maybe we should have left the market hunters continue as they did before current waterfowl regulations. There would be a lot less duck hunters than there are today, that is if they were not extinct.

I bet it was someone who had an incredible moment of panic when they realized what they did, even if it was back at the ramp or at home later.

Could have been an amateur wildlife biologist that just needed to get his hands on it in the name of science.

I put on my science education boots to try to kick something in here. Glad I did because we sure are having to wade through lots of....stuff.

Off the record, my personal favorite endangered species is the Texas blind salamander. They go great grilled and put on an atheist salad. You know, a salad that knows it's better than other salads.

I do continue to be amazed how 100+ years of science and conservation advances are completely lost on so many. No wonder we have to have so many "idiot" laws.

I am pretty sure JP knew how this thread would play out after he posted it. The initial responses of some are very predictable. Could it be possible that those first few replies after post #1 is the real troll bait? Could it be the replys to those initial responses are the real trolls? So been any whoopers on Truscott. How is the hunting out there this season anyway. I hear they been stacking the green on Tawakoni. No whoopers there.

Just getting back to this thread. Have they determined if the crane was shot?

First we must determine if it was actually a crane. Apparently only a scientist can do that.

What's wrong with duck hunting in a 2wd pickup? I have a four wheeler and a rhino to get me to the duck hole, so I have never needed a 4wd pickup.

AUSTIN -- Texas game wardens in Aransas County are awaiting necropsy results on a state and federally protected whooping crane found dead Sunday near a duck blind located in the Aransas Bay system close to Sand Lake.

The bird was partially decomposed when recovered by Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens who had been contacted Sunday morning by a local hunting guide who had originally discovered the crane.

Whoopers are the tallest birds in North America, standing nearly five feet. The cranes are solid white except for black wing-tips that are visible only in flight. They fly with necks and legs outstretched. Each fall, they make a 2,400-mile migratory journey from Canada to the Texas coast. In the spring, they return north.

TPWD game wardens and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are jointly investigating this incident. If anyone has additional information regarding this matter, they are encouraged to call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-792-GAME (4263). Callers may remain anonymous.

Since beginning their slow recovery from a low of 16 birds in the 1940s, whoopers have wintered on the Texas coast on and near Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Recently though, several groups of whooping cranes have expanded their wintering areas to include other coastal areas and some inland sites in Central Texas.

"Whooping Cranes encountered by hunters in the Central Flyway are part of the last remaining self-sustaining wild population of about 200 individual birds known as the Aransas/Wood Buffalo Park Population (AWBP). They breed at Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada, migrate through the Central Flyway (North Dakota, South Dakota, eastern Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma), and winter at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. The fall migration begins in mid-September and they normally reach their wintering grounds by early December. These cranes usually migrate as a single pair, family group, or in small flocks. When Whooping Cranes travel as singles they often join groups of Sandhill Cranes."

It's sad the government spends so much on a dam bird and cant even take care of our freaking war vets, but they will piss off money every other way they can! I can only fathom to imagine how many millions upon millions of dollars was spent on these dam whooping cranes. Tired of governent BS.
