No need to run dogs for coons. Set up a corn feeder, get you a decent night vision scope or a spotlight and go to town. You won't be treeing any coons in that part of Texas.

You could tree coons at or on the deer feeders. What we lack in number of trees, we make up for in number of coons.

You are about 4 hours from the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico, more trees than you can shake a stick at. Also a lot of other BLM land in between, if you are into predator hunting, New Mexico has more coyotes than they do people along with other predators. Just make sure you know the license and game requirements for New Mexico.

Not sure when the big game drawings are, but you have chances at mule deer, elk, antelope, etc.. Contact New Mexico game and fish, better do it now, times is running out. You can also find BLM places for quail, dove etc. if bird hunting is your thing. If you don't get a lottery tag there are also options of landowner tags, a little more expensive, but worth the trip.

There are also plenty of opportunities on this side of the border, but it will be on private land and you will most likely need a lease. Once you get settled in your coworkers and local gun shops can be your source of information.

You forgot to mention that those utility poles also serve as shade trees for rattlesnakes. up

If you do you will miss out on some fantastic parts of Texas, just to name a couple, Balmorhea and Ft Davis. Then Marfa, Terlinqua, and Alpine, and then the Guadalupe mountains.

You know. This place has breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. This place is beUtiful in its own harsh way.
Some outstanding people.

There are MANY reasons to not like this place. I've lived here for 2.5 years of boom time, and I'm looking forward to my next chapter in life. But I have many more good memories than bad. I'll miss this place.

This isn't a paradise, but it can be a home. Plenty of places within an easy drive.

There aren't many places in Texas you can hunt on the cheap.

Old picture of the CAF! On the other hand if you want to just get away like was said any direction in couple to few hours you can find something to do. I do really well without crowds so the metromess and city lights can burn out and I don't care. I drive 40 miles one way daily to work and biggest part is zero traffic, chance of seeing game(deer, hogs, yotes) and maybe 4 oncoming trucks. Gives me time to get ready for day and amped up for return to trip to Slodetha. granted not same town I grew up in and someday will leave and not look back but till then I make a living out of it, cuss it, and praise at same time. There is good and bad about any place we are no different. Just have to find your niche and make do with what you got. Odessa half way between metroplex and El Paso but smack dab in the middle of hell! hanged

Brayden (Lazy L's Southern Comfort) you will be missed! You were more than a pet you were my reason to rise and return for many days! You were my rock!

Couple hours driving east and you've at least got more mesquite and maybe a little water. San Angelo, Colorado city area have some good hunting and bodies of water if you want to wet a line.

If you find a little extra time and for recreation, drive out West Odessa and look at all the Cartel Houses they have built with tall fences around them. Impressive. Just don't stop and take a pic. bolt

I'm listing my house in Andrews tomorrow if you want to live somewhere that's not in hoe-dessa. smile

All in all I actually liked living out there (but I moved from CA so anything in TX was an updgrade). There were very limited hunting opportunities but I found quite a few good spots for dove w/in 10 miles of the NM border. Lots of BLM land around Eunice and Jal if you want to go shoot coyotes.

Be careful driving out there. A good friend was killed on Monday night when he rear-ended a tanker that pulled out in front of him outside of Seminole. I worked construction just across the NM border and we lost 3 people from our site to traffic accidents within the last year. Those oil field trucks will pull out and expect you to slow down for them. Lots of people passing on blind corners and humps in the road too.

If you're coming out here for work, and absolutely insist on living in the Midessa area, I'd error on the side of Midland.

It's quite a bit more expensive, but worth it in my book. If you have even the most remote inkling of a choice though, I'd recommend just commuting from elsewhere - the cost of living is just absurd. As an example, my buddy and I split an average 2 bedroom apartment, and each pay about &1,100/month.

I have stopped and taken several pics. Then a few weeks later my buddies and me go and have a big party by breaking the front door and announcing "Search Warrant!!!!!!!!"

For a really good time go visit the Odessa 'meteor crater'. Enjoy all the plastic bags and assorted trash stuck in the mesquites along the highway, they add to the charm of the place.

If you want to raise kids live in Midland. If you want to raise hell live in Odessa. I grew up in Odessa and that was a common observation.
