Bought a Daisy BB gun for my son when he was 7. We spent many great hours in the backyard plinking at paper targets and whatnot. I bought a pellet gun with a cheap 3x scope for him when he was 8. Many more good hours target shooting in the backyard. Went through a lot of ammo. Even with the cheap equipment, my son got where he could drive tacks. We had a creek at the end of the block. My son asked if we could go hunt there. I told him that we never hunt animals for target practice unless it's a predator. If you kill something, you clean it and eat it. First afternoon out, he took out a squirrel with a head shot from about 25 yards. He ran over, picked it up and asked how we clean it. An hour later, we were nibbling on deep fried squirrel and he loved it. At 11, he took a 6 pointer and an axis buck with my 25-06. He's been a life long hunter ever since. Neither of my daughters ever showed any interest in hunting, though my oldest has her C&C.

My kid started going when he could walk and was shooting some kind of weapon shortly after. Killed his first deer at 8 and has now hunted about five states and killed close to 30 whitetails at 16. Spoiled a$$ kids.

I started my oldest with a BB gun at 3 and work on popping balloons attached to my bow target in the yard. At four we spent time behind a 22 and at 5 we began shooting a .223 in the afternoons. By the time deer season opened he had shot 200+ rounds of .223 and could put 5 on a paper plate at 75 yds. He shot his first deer at 5 and this year at 6 he was able to get a really nice mature deer. I have stepped through the same process with my middle son who is now 5, but he is just not ready to shoot at deer even though he has had the same exposure. All kids are different and its important to not push them until they are absolutely ready to harvest an animal. Welcome to the forum RC, your son got a nice buck this year!
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

BB gun at 3-4 and took his first deer at 6 with a .410 slug. He is 11 now and has taken some darn good deer with his .243.. He's killed more dove, duck and quail than I have, he loves wing shooting, prefers a 20 gauge. And for fun he calls in and plinks coyotes with his .22
