I planted two Red Oaks next to our house last year. They were 3" caliper trunk and probably 10' tall when we planted them. In a year they have both gained an inch in trunk diameter and are probably 15' tall now. Both doing great. I watered the heck out of them through the summer though. We went with Red Oak because they are a faster growing oak, and we planted them on the south side of the house to block the summer sun and they lose their leaves in the fall unlike live oaks so we get the winter sun.

We planted about 40 fruit and nut trees in a pasture a few years ago and since they weren't watered regularly, we lost 3/4 of them. The peach trees seem to do the best here and are by FAR the largest trees out of what all is left.

Let me know if you want some seeds and will pick you up some.....Mimosa is another fast growing tree with pretty foliage and beautiful spring blooms. Many consider it a trash tree too frown
I hate to tell you but most any tree or shrub from China is a nuisance tree or shrub and is on the 'DO NOT PLANT' list. Better to stick with natives. Cedar elm is a great native tree, grows fast and extremely hardy. There are groups trying to remove tallow trees and Chinese privet shrubs from the landscape. They're much too invasive and take over the native trees habitat in no time.

Water oaks are native to east Texas, they can't handle the alkaline soil of north central Texas. Shumardi or Spanish oaks will survive and thrive.

I hate to tell you but most any tree and especially elms were considered invasive also.....OMG and they came from asia also grin

Elms are deciduous and semi-deciduous trees comprising the genus Ulmus in the plant family Ulmaceae. The genus first appeared in the Miocene geological period about 20 million years ago, originating in what is now central Asia.[1] These trees flourished and spread over most of the Northern Hemisphere, inhabiting the temperate and tropical-montane regions of North America and Eurasia, ranging southward across the Equator into Indonesia.

You ever see how many seeds fall from a cedar elm? Thousands. The world keeps spinning and evolution is happening all the time........Elms are really bad for mistletoe also and are related to hackberries(I got nothing against hackberries either as many of the native birds and squirrels depend upon their berries to survive the winter)

Lace Bark Elm is a fast grower and is not invasive. We are just south of you and have had good luck with Bigelow Oak, Chinquapin (chinkapin) Oak and Red Oaks growing relatively fast.

Here's another one close to you. We bought several trees from them. Watch for root girdling on the container grown trees, they have some trees they can dig and put burlap too.

Check with TPWD. Our biologist turned us on to a program they do where they give away trees for your property. I picked up a ton of red & white oaks, poplars etc. for free last year.

Go with trees that are native in your area and you will be good.

Tallows are banned, only ones that are in tree nursery can be sold now, that should say something about them

Try:
Texas Red Oak
Shumard Red Oak
Lacey Oak
Monterrey Oak
Cedar Elm
Dig a good hole, lightly feed, keep watered the first couple of years.
I have a Lacey Oak in Black Clay that has been planted for 4 years. Started as a 15g(5'x2') that's about 15'x20 now.
