I know a pig has a ton of waste that comes with it. Head, hide, bones, etc......so I can see getting about 25% of what a pig weighs.

I took a deer to a well known processor, and they called and told me to come pick up my order.
When I did they had one little box about 15# and that there was supposed to be two boxes, and I told them that when they find the rest of it I would be back.
They called about a week later and said they had all of my order ready.
Went back same thing one little box. They said they would go and look for the rest of it, and for me to wait, which I did for about 20 minutes. I told them to keep it as I walked out, and about six months later they closed down.
I'd say to process your own, as you are probably not getting your meat that you bring in, and you might take care of yours, but the other guy may leave his out with the flies for hours before he takes it in.
Deal with someone you know you can trust, or do it yourself!

I totally disagree. In the past 5 years Lora and I have processed about 200 pigs of varying sizes, and a feral hog if done right should dress out around 40% to 50% of its live weight.
If you are just talking about boned out meat, it should be 30% to maybe 35%.
Even if it was boned out meat, 16 pounds is only about 10% of a 150 pound animal. At 25% there should have been 30 to 35 pounds of meat off that size of pig.
There is a lot more waste to deer, or any of the cud chewers than there is to pigs. JMO.

AndrewR, the processor gave you extra meat.
A doe even if it went 150 live weight, will only dress out about 30% to maybe 35%.
The most you should have got back is about 50 pounds of meat and that would be on the high side.
i didnt throw into consideration to the pork mixed into the mess since it all was sausaged out.

Thats why we do all of our own processing, cause there isn't any reason to steal from yourself. You should have gotten alot more than what you got. No doubt about it you got taken
Bartender, bring me anything except brake fluid, cause I don't plan on stopping!

Just something to think about, my grandpa shot a 185 lb boar this year. I skinned out the head for a euro, and the hide alone weighed 80 lb. So that knocked it down to a 105 lbs real quick. I know to expect a certain percentage, but they are probably not as exact as some think.

Not enough piggyback....give 'em what for and get some money back. Don't take "meat", though...

Gotta watch 'em. A friend took a deer in thinking he should get back about 50 lbs of meat and got back 30. He went back and raised sand and finally got what he thought was "his" 20 pounds. It was not his and I couldn't tell if it was really venison...

After the last few years of taking them to the processor, we just decided to get a 1 HP grinder & do it ourselves. It has been worth EVERY penny we spent on it. We got a heck of a deal. Friend had a new 1, he used it twice & cleaned it(looked brand new)& we bought it off him half price. Doubt we EVER take anything to the processor ever again.

This is one reason this is our last year to use a processor. I called about my 3 deboned deer a month ago after they had been at the meat market for 3 1/2 weeks. The girl said they had no record of my deer. After 2 days of calling and finally talking to the owner, they called the very next day and said my sausage and hamburger was ready. The sausage is horrible and I've been feeding it to my dogs. We have used this family for many years to process our deer and hogs, but now the father has retired and the sons are running the business in 2 neighboring towns. They always had the best smoked sausage but now it sucks. They are vey reasonable on their prices but if the finished product is used for dog food it isnt worth the price.

Well I use Steve's Meat Market in Brady and have never had any probs. Great guy and fair prices for the quality. The only down side is he is an Aggie. Still the best IMO and cuts me a deal every now and then. He does not do hogs though just about 2000 deer a season though
