I got wt doe in heat all over the place with wt bucks chasing non stop. Also have several axis bucks on property and have not seen a single axis buck even put their nose in the air when around a wt doe in heat. Also have seen axis doe in heat around wt bucks with no response.

I don't think it happens in the real world.

I've never heard this? Source? They belong to very different genus's. Also even so that's stupid.....Can't people just let species be for what they are?

Kobus,
Aren't you the one who started the thread and asked about Axis deer Crossbreeding? Was your purpose to start a dialogue so that you could get on your soap box about the evils off cross breeding and the need to keep all species "pure"?

I was curious about if they cross or not. I heard about the crossing with hog deer in zoos.

Black Eagle in Harper has a strong herd of both Hog Deer and Axis Deer. They keep to themselves.

On a ranch elk, red deer, or sika usually won't cross breed, but you put a elk bull in a pen of sika does you will get a bunch of hybrid fawns. In a small 10 acre pen you will have cross breeding take place. In the early 90's I was at the Priour ranch looking at Dale's mouflons. Dale pointed out a hybrid cross between his Dyboski Sika and a Axis. He said that was the only one he had seen. I have seen besides that one a couple of others that were crossed (axis x sika). I bought the last one that I saw. It was a doe. She looked basically like a sika with bright white spots. She hung around with the axis, but she always bred back to a sika. I raised several fawns from her. One other thing about her, she was cold sensitive like a axis. I eventually lost her in a ice storm we had. None of those crosses that I mentioned were planned. They were in small inclosures and it just happened.
