I just ordered one of these.....what does the hole in the scope cap do?

DocHorton,

The hole lets in just enough light to the CMOS sensor to allow you to use the scope in the daytime. If you let in too much light the scope doesn't work.

One of my other buddies mentioned that right at dusk, there is a window when it's too dark to see with the cap on, but still too much light to go without the cap. I wonder if opening up the 1/16 hole a little bit would help...if so how much? Any thoughts?

I'm sorry; I meant that the other way around. Sightmark told me #30 was the best fit.

I can tell you that 30 is too small. 31 is a real tight fit. 33 will work with tape.

For the hole issue, 1/16 is best, but you do get some issues in the transition time. I mistakenly drilled mine out to 1/4 inch which was too big. I put a piece of electricians tape across it to fix it and found that I can just pull the tape away when I am in that transition time. You can also adjust the brightness with the knob and that will get you through a good part of that time. It may be that the best hole size is somewhere between 1/16 and 1/4. The original cap with the filtered hole works great, so the best solution would be to take that filter, before you lose it and glue it on a butler creek that has a hole drilled in it.

They both offer a 101% price guarantee. Might be an opportunity to get some decent pricing.

I was under the impression that the doubler for the 4.6 hasn't been released yet. Is there any fitment issues with the current one out? Maybe it's a lense/clarity issue?

JustWingem - Here's a pic of the XT with the doubler...

Just got in my Photon XT today (as a warranty replacement for my photon that ceased to function which I had purchased second hand from HuntTXHogs here). Those of you ordering butler creek caps needn't any longer as the newest shipment apparently has a redesigned flip cap with a pinhole in it. Talk about listening to the end user.

Overall, upon initial installation I am very pleased. I was most impressed with the customer service from the warranty folks. I sent my original photon 5x in a couple of weeks ago. I contacted them this week and was told I'd be getting a warranty replacement when they received a new shipment. It arrived via UPS today. Really great of them to stand behind their product.

***Disclaimer*** I don't work for any night vision manufacturer or distributor, only a pleased customer.

They told me the same thing. Even said, we'll mail you the first new cap we get. It came it the mail today. It's the same damn cap as before.

Hoping this new cap exists somewhere.

Sapper I am glad you got fixed up - Sellmark has A+ customer service and they constantly go that extra mile in listening to consumer feedback and implementing "smart" changes to products.

Let us know when you get some quarry down with the new PhotonXT.

What's the best way to mount the XT? I've got a 30mm SWFA SALT mount that is similar to the Burris PEPR, but heard that's not ideal.

Drop Tine - Before you go out and buy something I would certainly try your SALT. I think it will work. I have the PEPR and it works just fine. Otherwise, a standard set of rings would work. Can't tell you what height because everyone prefers something different and no two manufactures seem to make their low, medium and high the same height.

I put my name on several pre-order lists in order to get the new Photon. I got mine a month ago. Another vendor called me yesterday and finally has one with my name on it. If someone wants my spot in line, you have about 2 hours to let me know. He wanted an answer by noon today.

The price is $541.25 in San Antonio, via cash or PayPal Friends. If you're out of town, I will ship at actual cost.

You must pay me upfront, then I'll release it on my CC, and get it to you ASAP.

I have mine on the Burris PEPR. I can honestly says it's a royal pain. 30mm QD rings would be MUCH better. The fixed position of the rings on the PEPR mount limit your options in a way that rings would not.
