When I was a kid, we used to hunt this one guys ranch on occasion

His rules were simple.....if you want to get some meat, shoot a doe. If you shoot a buck, you have to mount it (this cut down greatly on immature bucks getting shot)

Was effective and made eveyone happy and everyone had fun

IMO this Deer management kick has ruined it for a lot of hunters. Used to be a fella shot an 8 point Buck that was really something. It didn't matter is it was 10" or 20" wide. Now you can't put a Bucks picture on here if it doesn't gross at least 150" and not be called a "Bambi Killer" unless you call it cull or management. The term management I can stomach but not the term cull when referring to Deer.

If you let Deer Management and other hunters ruin hunting for you, you are doing it wrong. No way someone could ruin hunting for me because they don't think I should have shot a certain deer. We do "cull" on our place and IMO, they are culls. We don't want them in the herd, we don't want to feed them, so we kill them. They aren't shot for a trophy and they aren't shot simply for meat (though that is a nice bonus), many are shot because we don't want them out there.

Most hunters never get a chance at a 150, but with management, the chances have been increased for hunters in all areas. I don't kill 150" deer every year and have no problem putting my "little" deer up here next to the giants.

Just because someone doesn't practice management, doesn't make them any less of a hunter. If someone can make you feel that way, be mad at them, but I sure wouldn't let it take away from hunting in itself. Just my 2cents

Sounds like the guy needs a lesson in deplomacy, if the meeting was as you describe it. His comments would have caused anyone to become defensive for sure. I would have first made the comment that what you do on your property is your business, but that by working together, the deer herd throughout the area can be improved.

And unfortunately this seems to lead to high fencing more often than not.

I get the burr under your saddle with the neighbor trying to preach to you about management, but at the same time - why get pissed? Just tell him that you've hunted with management in mind for the last 20 years and are glad he and others are on board with it, but you don't think there needs to be a HOA formed for it and go about your business.

Every time you pull the trigger and kill a deer, you are practicing management. Every time. The word "cull" is an old ranching term used to thin down the herd in bad times. They just carried it over to the deer. You can cull any deer no matter the sex or size of it or you can kill them, both have the same meaning. For the most part today we are the predator in the mix with deer. You can kill like a predator or like a hunter, it is your choice.

I've been on several leases with a "management plan" to shoot only big bucks. Then several hunters shoot a small basket 8 point. That's fine. But if I want to shoot a certain deer, I'm going to shoot it.

I hope you told the neighbor your thoughts and didn't sugar coat it.

I am all about game management but... Don't EVER tell me what I need to do on MY property. The thing that really bothers me about this, is the fact that he acts like he needs to tell me. We have 5 hunters that have been hunting for 20+ years. I think we get it at this point. Plus, my brother is in the navy and gets to hunt once every 5 years or so, I think it's safe to say he can shoot whatever he darn well pleases. I think this whole deer management thing has some people overthinking hunting and the outdoors in general. It's hard to just have a good time sometimes.

Mr. Turner: Save it buddy!

Rather than rant on here, why not say everything you put on here to the neighbor? People being sheepish to confrontation is why bad people keep doing what they do. You should man up and say all of this to him. I have many friends and a few enemies, but they all at least know where I stand.

To each his own in regards to what is or isn't a trophy; what is or isn't a "cull" buck, etc... If you don't like where or who your hunting with because it doesn't fit your idea of hunting, move. As for a neighbor coming to tell me what "we" are doing or not doing in this particular area; he and I wouldn't have been friends when the conversation was over. If management gets in the way of having fun while hunting, its time to find a new hobby.

Deer are like fire ants but with the opposite goal in mind. The only way to achieve success is by working with your neighbors.

Had this discussion with one of my neighbors last year. I had hunted a good bit already and he asked what I had been seeing. Lots of deer and one really nice young 8 point buck. He asked how big and why I didn't shoot him. I explained that he was young but was the best deer on the place and I hoped that he would make it a couple more years and then be a really good one. Couple weeks later, he called all excited about a big buck he had killed and wanted me to come see it. Yep, it was that young 8 pt. . I congratulated him on a great deer he had got and was glad for him. His place, his rules.

We don't shoot young bucks and leave does until December. That said, you do as you damn well please on your land and I'll do the same on mine.

Well, a little pot stirring for you

I'd much rather have the neighbor who is conservation minded than the one who is gonna "take what's his" just because he owns/leases the place

I would bet 99% of landowners would want the same.

Him holding off on young bucks isn't gonna affect the hunting.....mowing them down will

On one side of the spectrum its "we are gonna shoot whatever we want (which is usually the first young buck with antlers) and you have a pasture devoid of any bucks older than 3 years old. any shot at a wall hanger is nil.

on the other end is the micro managed, deer has to be video taped and approved by a panel before you can shoot at it. even the does have harvest guidelines. Hunting this pasture is just as bad as hunting the other pasture because any deer you shoot you are scared to death of doing something wrong you won't even really enjoy it..

Boy I couldn't have said that better. I sure miss the days when everyone was after a nice buck, a trophy was a great event, and the kids got to shoot any legal deer. Everyone got pats on the back all around whenever a deer was brought in. We "managed" our places just fine because we had all been hunting a while-even the young folks wanted to hold out for a nice one after the first couple because that's what the men were doing. And a deer was just a "nice 8", a "big, heavy 10", or a "monster", etc. All this score junk was unheard of.....

We've historically limited each hunter to one buck, two does; However with the last 2-3 three years of drought, we're hoping not to take as many does this year; However, there are some that are going to take a doe or two no matter what.

I wish we'd save those for kids, and maybe late season if we are seeing more, right now our numbers don't support a big kill off. Bucks, are either babies or monsters right now out west, not many 2-4 year olds to kill, and if they are, I sure hope people are smart enough to leave them alone. There's already a hole in age structure there due to mother nature.

Folks like Mr. Turner are annoying. I would have just blown off the encounter. He means well, but since you don't report to him, he need not know what you shot.

With that said, if it pisses you off, you need to tell Mr. Turner to mind his own business, that you are hunting legally and that is your only obligation.

I help fill feeders on a buddy's place near Rule. Y'all aren't hurting for deer, near as I can see.

If that type of management was necessary or helpful to your area, the state would have imposed AR resttrictions.
