Another option would be if she could shoot your .270 would be the reduced recoil loads for them. I have used them in my .270 for first time hunters a time or two. The felt recoil is like a .243 at most. Much better option IMO.... In my experience a 223 with good ammo is as good or better than a reduced load for a bigger gun. The reduced loads don't have near the shock value. I have shot a fair number of deer with 223 and reduced 270 loads. They both work but if I have my pick ill reach for the 223 and 60 grain partitions over 100 grain prohunter and 270. IME experience with both, if the daughter can handle the stock length on the .270 I would go with it. IIRC my reduced recoil loads were 110 grain that I used. The first time I had seen them used was with a lady borrowing my .270 on her first buck hunt in La Salle County. She put that bullet through both shoulders at 90-100 yards a 5 yr old buck. He hit the ground without a step.

If given the choice my son would reach for the .223 over anything he or I have. He's big and owns other calibers that he shoots well, but he has 100% confidence in the .223
At the end of the day it's what she shoots best and has confidence in that matters. Take her to the range with both and let her and the targets tell you what she needs.

As was said before, it isn't the gun, it's the shot placement. IMO, the .223 doesn't allow much room for error but only you can make that call. Good luck

If a bow will kill a deer, a .223 will definately kill one.

If a bow will kill a deer, a .223 will definately kill one. It amazes me that those who will shoot a deer with a bow think a 223 is not enough rifle for a deer. In all my years of guiding I have had more trouble finding deer being shot with bows or large caliber rifles the hunter was scared of than deer taken with smaller caliber rifles.

I've shot big hogs with the Winchester ballistic silver tip 55 grain (223). My brothers son has killed 6 deer with it. He's a small kid. It's a law enforcement round. it breaks apart and creates massive internal wound chambers. It does quite the number on the pigs also. Massive blood trails on the few I've had to track. I think she'd do just fine with the 223. I'd use that ammo for hunting and you can't go wrong. She will be able to manage the lighter gun with the lighter recoil much better. Thus giving her confidence and good shot placement. ......Just my opinion though..

If she's a good shot, 55 gr. soft point. Placed no further down the neck than 6 inches from the jaw hinge. No tracking required!

My dad, starts all the grand kids on 223. They have all taken deer with it, and it doesn't scare them to practice with it.

Question for the group. I want to take my 8 year old daughter out for deer and have a TC Venture in 223. It has 1:12 rate of twist and I use Barnes VOR-TX ammo - 55 grain triple shock X hollow point.
I don't want to open up a caliber discussion as I have larger calibers I hunt with. I use the rifle to hunt predators in the offseason, but want to get her into the blind and maybe have a chance at a deer or a hog. She is small framed so she can't shoot my 270 or 30.06
What are your experiences with this caliber on whitetails or hogs? 1000's of deer in TX fall to the 223 every year. I'd be more worried about getting her the best electronic ear muffs you can, then caliber. That way noise doesn't scare her and you can talk her through it the whole time. Good luck and look forward to the success stories and smiles

Another pro .223 for deer. My daughter started hunting 3 years ago at the age of 8 and has killed a deer every year with my .223. I use a 75 grain Hornady BTHP that packs a wallop. I' ve posted a photo on here from last year's hunt that my game camera caught. It was a mature doe that the .223 with 75 grain Hornady flipped head over heels. The buck she shot the year before went less than 50 yards and left as heavy a blood trail as I have ever seen. I have complete confidence in the 75 grain Hornady.

It's killed dozens of deer and hundreds of hogs, many out past 100 yards. If you can place the shot, you can make the kill, no questions asked. Drives me nuts when people try to say it's not enough gun. They obviously have not witnessed the insane amount of damage a 55 grain soft point will do to the insides of deer-sized animal. And without ruining meat.

I have a .223 that I do not use for deer hunting because I love my .243 too much, but I would not hesitate for a second to pull the trigger on a deer. When I was younger I would use a .222 that we still have around and I will actually be taking it to the blind this weekend for my 6 y/o to use. For all intensive purposes a .222 and a .223 are nearly the same round and that .222 of ours has killed more deer than can be counted! To the OP, I think a .223 is a great round for your daughter to take a deer with! Good luck to y'all!
