I have never in my life heard this but snooping around on the Texas Bow Hunter forum people swear by vanilla extract as a cover scent and attractant. Any of yall have experience with this?

I like the vanilla buck bomb but I think all the Texas Bow Hunter guys bought it all.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Very hard for me to imagine deer that have never smelled vanilla not being spooked by it, but who knows?
Vanilla will cover scent. That is fact. You can pour a teaspoon in a paint can before you mix it and it'll go a long ways in hiding the smell.
I just do trust any new smell, especially one as powerful as vanilla.

They are curious animals and the sweet smell draws them in to take a look.

A buddy of mine has always used real vanilla for drawing in deer. He swears by it but only uses the real stuff, not the extract flavoring.

I was thinking about putting a little in some hand corn and toss it out after my hunt to see if activity changes any. Just out of curiosity really.

I've been using pure vanilla extract for 5 years. It is a 'cover scent', not an attractant. I've had deer walk directly under my stand sniffing and never got busted as long as I'm still.

If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

If you ever smell white oak acorn scent, smells a lot like vanilla extract, that may be the connection. I focus on my outer wear, I like to keep my outer wear in a cooler or plastic bag with crushed up acorns, pine bows, dirt, anything I pick up around my stand and a fine dusting of acorn rage. Some guys I know will drop a little doe urine in there with their hunting clothes, I have not gone that far, they all harvest deer every year, but so do I, minus the piss odor.

Years ago I recall someone selling a cover sent that was vanilla extract based. So I guess folks believe it works.
As an aside, I once hunted in Alabama (about 20 yrs ago) and the guide sprayed turpentine on his boots an swore by it as a cover scent...that was a first for me.

I have had some of the old school hog trappers tell me they use real vanilla in their hog traps. They swear by it but never anything on deer hunting.

It's the same as those gallons of Swamp Donkey, apple syrup, etc. If it's sweet and (most have a corn syrup dirivative) smells good, it might work. I mix corn syrup, molasses, vanilla and salt and make a pretty good concoction. I've had deer on a line with immitation vanilla....line 'me up like a feeding trough. Vanilla also kills vegetation....ahem, discovered that after I sprayed a shrub.

I used it after my buddy Novemberyet let me in on the secret. Every time I fill feeders, check cameras, or go hunting I spray it all around. It's cheaper than any of that other crap and it smells strong. I put it in a spray bottle and just spray away when I'm out. I start spraying it around June/July when I start feeding. I even sprayed the corn that I hand toss. I have had deer down wind of me and never spook. I will say this though my deer aren't pressured. I keep a spray bottle in each blind, one in my back pack and one in my truck. Makes your truck smell purdy too!

Everything in hunting is the next big thing till people realize it doesn't work LOL. Ive fell for a couple of those gimmicks. Vanilla, don't knock it till you tried it. I've used it for years. Mostly when I hunt a new spot. Like when I get drawn on a TPWD hunt where I only have a couple days to hunt it. I find a "promising" spot, and slosh a bottle out. Before the hunt is up, I'm covered up in deer. If you want to try your own experiment, mix vanilla with water in a spray bottle. Put out some hand corn in 2 places. Spray one with the vanilla. Put a camera up and see which pile the deer will eat first. I'm going to be doing a experiment with a thermacell in the next few weeks.
