Here are couple of pictures from the hunt.

Glassing for some Elk, we saw a couple in those cedar trees - they are about 2.5 miles away (straight shot.... up and down the 4 ridges was a bit further and a pain in the [censored])

By the time we got to the 3rd ridge to shoot them 4 cowboys were running their cattle thru the same sport and scared them off. We saw 4 decent Bulls but they never had any cows with them and didn't pay much attention to them... the 2nd time we found the Bulls we knew they were the same ones and didn't pay much attention to them and then a few cows and a calf took off. Had we been on higher alert it would have worked out much better but by the time we got down the Bulls ran the cows up and over the ridge. Zack pulled out a calf call to bring the Cows back.... The bulls walked back over but not the Cows. We were about to get up and move again and we heard/saw a calf pop out. She didn't take off with the herd and I debated on waiting for a mature cow or giving up some quantity for some delicious calf meat.... I shot her.

Right before I left Steve Woods sent me another one of his custom hunters to take with me... Steve makes some of the best knifes and I was thrilled to add this to my collection

On day 2 we headed back out early and within a hour we spotted a herd with about 20 Cows and 3 Bulls 2 ridges over; Curtis Helton (Stiller Precision) picked out the Cow he wanted and got set up while Zack and I worked on ranging the Cow....

Not the most forgiving terrain to hump around in but we got lucky and both got our animals in 1.5 days and in pretty much t-shirt weather.

A couple of Bulls

A small Herd

After we were done we spent some time visiting with Gunwerks and Best of the West. We has a choice to go Horseback riding (I have never been on a horse) or to go waste the rest of our ammo on Prairie Dogs since we both only shot 1 round and had some left over.... We ended up on the horses for a few hours and I don't regret that at all - it was a blast.

When we were walking to the first Cow's we saw that were run off on the 2nd ridge halfway down it got pretty rocky.... nothing like hearing the rattle of a pissed off snake. This is the best pic I could get as he started to go back under the rock. He was all coiled up and singing the song of his people to us but I couldn't get my phone out fast enough.

After eating that calf, you won't want anything else. That's about as good as it gets.

What were you shooting?

I had a 7 Rem Mag and Curtis had a 6.5x284 - we really wanted to get some longer shots on these but they were both within 600 yards. We did stop at some BLM land to test out the new Gunwerks rangefinders which were fantastic. Accurate reads out to a mile, however the integrated ballistic calculator stops at 1400. Their rangefinders are essentially a rangefinder and a kestrel mashed together (less wind readings). You get line of sight distance and a corrected ballistic distance too based on the angle. If you load your profiles you will get the firing solution as well... We picked a spot at 1380 and the device was spot on, and matched my Kestrel with Applied Ballistic Data. After that we found a target at a mile and sent a few downrange as well, the Kestrel was again spot on but the Gunwerks does stop computing at 1400.

I am going to sell my range finder and replace it with a Gunwerks G7 BR2... the ease of use and the corrected ballistic distance were real time savers, especially with any high angle shooting.

There is a great overlay map for google earth if you want to identify BLM land.
