It needs to be October 18th. I can stop thinking about taking the 300 Ultra Mag for a walk. Ill have to remember to bring spare hearing protection cause its really loud with the brake.

Seems pretty quite out in open country. I imagine I'll be shooting the RUM as well.

Got new tires on Dusty the trailer today. Saw some places I need to caulk to try to keep Dusty less dusty inside. Gathering all my c-r-a-p in the center of the barn floor. I'll empty out some tubs in the next few days and shake the west Texas sand out of everything. So far, I think I've got about 14 different ways to cook a meal and numerous light sources. I'll be doing quite a bit of paring down, but I'll probably still be ready for the Apocalypse. By the end of the week I'll pretty much be drowning in axis meat, so I kind of have to cook everyone some axis burgers one night. The wife is starting to stress about the group meals I committed her to. She's a helluva cook, we just have to figure out "boiling bags" big enough for her entres. I might be warming casseroles in a skillet. She also just brought home some Costco meals to do a trial on.

I'm planning on bringing a sawzall for cleaning/quartering, depending on time of kill, etc. I'll also have a hatchet in my pack. 'Not forcing the sawzall on anyone, it just makes pretty quick work of things. If I'm a tag-along helper, I'd be glad to pack it to the kill.

I know it depends on what I plan on doing, but, does anyone have any suggestions on:
1. How much propane? (1 lantern, 1 Coleman 2-burner stove, 1 fish/turkey-fry burner, probably 1 Mr. Heater)
2. How much gasoline? (I'm bringing the Honda 2000 genny. If there's any CPAP guys in the group that need power all night, please let me know; I'll baffle it as best I can.)
3. How much water? (5 gal. jugs and quart bottles for hunting.)
4. Does anyone need me to bring the extra (ground) tent? Sleeping pads? Shooting sticks? Espresso machine?

I'm getting pretty pumped (even if I don't see a bull), as you can tell, I'm starting to obsess (I'll be fine once I'm there), and the squirrels are dropping like flies to the Rem 541-S.

29 days to ETD for me and North2AK.

CR, if you where not getting some OCD now, then the whole trip would be boring. It will be worse next year, I promise.

Propane. I'd start with 2 bottles, there is likely a place in Dolores that can re-fill and there is usually someone running to civilization around Monday's.

Gas. It will depend on the mpg the honda gets. I'd say 10 gal. would get you to at least Monday? Also 2 gas stations at least I recall in Dolores.

Water, I used to take the 5 gal, but they are always harder to deal with, for the last 10 years or so, I take about 5-8 1 gallon jugs for coffee and a case or 2 of 16oz bottled waters for the trail or general drinking in camp.

I always go a few days early to fish and mess around/scout, but certainly would if going to a place I'm not familiar with, so that always effects the "consumables" you take.

I'm not much help on those questions. Western has a better grip on that stuff.

Rob, good list! You even have chap-stick on there and that is very important. A few times coming home with cracked ,bleeding lips convinced me years ago.

Sounds like a great hunt, what a trip that will be. Drop camp or guided??

Wish you much luck chasing the Wapiti up

Brother, you are in for a treat!! We lived outside Boise when I was in 2nd grade and I still remember some beautiful country.

You have allot of "1st" going on, you will be a different man in 3 weeks roflmao That is the way to hunt right there.

I know you will take a ton of photos, but make sure if you take any, get one with your bull on the pack mule "train", those are the neatest ones to blow up IMO . I didn't figure it out till my last one using a "hoss" to pack one out and the film my wife had, ended up double exposed bang

Sneaky, I take the medicated Carmex now, Doesn't seem to attract as many yellow jackets, fly's and bees, some, but not as much as the fruity smelling stuff.

I do know if you don't use something, you will look like you spent a month face down at a South Texas whore house! bolt

Hard to say. We started a new well on Monday. Frac is taking their sweet time, plus we have another one after that. Probably be a couple weeks, yet.

Thanks for the list and you're gonna have a great time, but you're arse isn't going to be your friend for a couple of days. I've done two guided, horseback hunts in Montana, between the Gallatin and Madison rivers. Both times I tried to get my posterior in shape by riding at a close-by stables beforehand. Second time I had a horse wreck two days before my flight. I went anyway, iced down my side in the motel room beforehand. Never could catch my breath, but got a respectable bull. Got home and found out I'd broken two ribs. So, watch that dam nag or gelding and don't give it an inch! Otherwise, have a heckuva time and kill something.

Are they treating you alright? I detect a decidedly more sour tone, as opposed to your usual dandelions-and-sunshine demeanor. geekfreak

wow, I haven't been on a horse since a kid. they said I didn't need to ride ahead. I contacted some stables a month ago for lessons and break my butt in, but they just got back to me this week and I didn't want to already be sore when the trip started. outfitter said it didn't matter if I rode ahead, I would be sore no matter what. laugh

yes, a bunch of firsts, I think I'm probably over prepared for most things, but what scares me is what I don't know. certain there will be some lessons learned. I have done last two years in Durango with Taylor (TnT), but no horses and freezer walls instead of tent walls. smile

I love it here. Much more laid back. It's just that this frac crew is about the worst I've seen, and that's saying something. I can't be the most pleasant person on this forum every day, you know.

You're outfitter is right. It takes a lot of consistent riding to avoid the soreness of sitting in a saddle all day. It's tolerable, though. You'll have the time of you're life, I'm sure. That's quite the adventure.

Rob, they will probably laugh, but if you have a towel and fold it length ways in half, then drape it over the saddle, (under your tail and inner thighs), it will help after you feel sore. Wait until your sore though, don't know why, but it helps.

I've heard wearing women's panty hose helps, but, depending on how big an ol' boy y'are, the wife says you might have to get the queen size. For the record, I never called you a queen.

The panty hose prevent chaffing. I've never tried it, but those that have, swear by it.

I hate chaffing to the point I've considered it. I just can't bring myself to do it. A man's got to know his limitations.
