Yea. I think we will probably be about 1 bird per box as well.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm sure others appreciate it as well.

I'm hoping to get some friendly advice. Long story short. I've never hunted except for trying to shoot rabbits on my aunts farm while I was a teen. Last year at the age of 42, my 12 year old daughter comes to me and tells me she wants to start hunting. I think its a phase and will pass, but it doesn't. So last Christmas we get a couple of shotguns and have been learning to shoot by heading out to the clay target range. We took hunter education and are going to try our first dove hunt next month. Which leads me to my next question.

I would also go take a few shooting lessons from a pro, it will be the best money you ever spent. You will save money on shells, long term you make money grin . And have a lot more fun. If you need the number of a good pro, shoot me a pm.

And your first dove hunt, a guided hunt would be best. Or at least a good private day lease, there are many guides on this forum that do day leases that I would use.

That's no joke, don't think I'd have as much fun as they guys that limit in 5 minutes, and have to turn in for the day LOL

I was thinking last night and a new question popped up. What do you do with your birds until you clean them? I've found plenty of videos on how to clean them. But doesn't mention when or care between downing and cleaning. Do you leave them out or throw them on ice? What the longest you wait to clean them in the Texas heat?

I don't put them on ice. I just put them on a strap or in a bag. Then clean them when I get home. I have heard of some people cleaning them in the field as they are shot or after the hunt but seems like more work than its worth. I think you have to keep a wing for id if a warden pulls up. Just easier to do it at home.
We have never had a problem by waiting and cleaning them at home.

A tip though that I learned somewhere is fill a gallon zip lock bag with water, push out the air then freeze. The ice blocks keep the meat from freezer burn which stink s when you go to cook them throughout the year.

Bring a trashbag and take the guts with you.

Attracts yotes and skunks
Attracts a shiatload of ants
Attracts buzzards that scares off doves the next day
It stinks.

Oh yea that reminds me for newbies NEVER lay your dove on or near the ground. The fireants will be all over them in a heartbeat. A few birds I had to dispose of when I started cause when I turned around 15 min later they were covered. Little buggers!

I always wait until I get to the house, but I hunt 5 minutes from home. I have no problem shooting a dove and cleaning it a couple hours later once the sun goes down and I get to the house.
