What is the effectiveness of scent killer when dealing with hogs and their very powerful noses? Do they even work?

No. Some will tell you they do because they had a deer downwind of them once, but that's a pretty weak correlation. You want to beat an animals nose? Stay downwind. That's it.

I spray down with scent killer usually then I go out. I think it helps reduce your scent signature, not eliminate it. I always hunt down wind though so it could very well be a complete gimmick. But I've killed more while using scent killer than not, again could be just coincidence could not, but it's not too expensive so I'll keep using them.

I use cover scent but not scent killer. It has been proven time and time again that the killers don't kill 100% of the scent. Not that the cover scent is any better but at least I can smell it so I know its doing something at least. Those killer products could just be water for all I know and I wouldn't know the difference. And don't even get me started on the scent killer clothes out there. You want to beat a hogs nose?? You better use the wind!

If hogs noses are an sensitive as claimed, then the hog will be able to pick out your scent from the myriad of other scents in the environment, one the hog, and from the scent killer itself. All you are doing is added the scent killer to the spectrum of smells.
I have used various killers and covers. Can't say any particularly work in any appreciable manner.

Scent killers are like the commercial attractants. They do one thing good. They take money out of your wallet and put it in theirs.

Spray a pair of stinky old shoes and do a before and after for yourself. It works great but does nothing to cover your breath. I am certain it helps but you are constantly producing new odors and heating those odors to 100 degrees. It can't hurt to use it and if it gives you a 5% advantage it is worth it. Mix your own with baking soda , small amount of hydrogen peroxide and drop of hunters soap, works just as good on stinky shoes for pennies.

If you are on my lease I would prefer you didn't use it. That way they will come to my set up and get killed by my arrow.

They MAY help some but if you not hunting wind you'll never see or hear all the animals you spook by odor. Most hogs skin themselves inside out when they get a whiff....

You're comparing a humans sense of smell with that of an animals, apples to torque wrenches. Once you understand that, you'll understand why scent killers and cover scents are worthless. Chupa

I wash my clothes with scent free detergent, use scent free soap and dead down wind spray but still believe it's about playing the wind.

As everybody else has said, Be down wind.
I hunt the wind but I will say, I still wash my camo in scent free detergent and hang dry, shower at camp w scent free soap, then spray down with more scent free crap before I go, Just so I don't go out in the woods smelling like home scents or scents from the truck.

Chupa What animals can or cannot smell is all theory. Same as their vision. Since we are not able to actually use their senses and have it interpreted by our brains it will always be theory. I just do what works for me. I seldom get "busted" even by down wind deer when I do my job right. Playing the wind works fine if you can stop an animal from circling down wind but none of my hunting spots have a cliff right behind me so animals can approach my sets from downwind at any time. Chance favors the well prepared and I prepare as well as I can. I have stands set for different winds but not all of the animals I hunt will read and follow the script so I do the best I can with scent control and cover scent in an attempt to make up for this short coming of my prey. You do what you want. Believe what you want. My results tell me what I do helps. Not always fool proof but I'll take any improvement in the odds I can get.

What animals can or cannot smell is all theory. Same as their vision. It is theory, except for all the testing that has been done on animals' abilities. Marketing, now that is the true theory. The theory is that if they can get a big enough name to promote a product, it will sell regardless of actual performance. So many of these claims are taken on faith that they are nearly faith-based religions.

Interesting perspective. So when both you and I are looking at the same image, I could see a circle, and you could see a square...or a pineapple...or Angelina Jolie? Chupa

What animals can or cannot smell is all theory. Whoa...wait a minute. If it were only theory as to what an animals sense of smell is, then wouldn't it be only theory that they can't smell something because it has scent cover or killer applied? I mean, I don't think you can have it both ways. Or do all the entrepreneurs cashing in on these products just know more than the scientists that have studied this for years and have no skin in the game as far as income is concerned?

I never use scent killer... I also smoke cigarettes when I hunt, and I figure that smell overpowers everything. As everyone else keeps saying, staying downwind is it.

They smell you AND the cigarette smoke. There is no masking your scent, there is no eliminating your scent. There is only killing them before they get in your scent cone. Chupa
