Federal Fusion 165s are incredibly accurate out of my Savage 99, so that's what I use.

I don't always shoot deer, but when I do I prefer a 223.

Here is a chart for the percentage of 1 shot kills by caliber:
308: 100% 30-06: 7% 270: 3% 30-30: 9%
Those are the only legit deer guns.
You be the judge. ....and you got this from???????? Everything I post is cold, hard, fact. Or is it cold beer? Anyhow, everything I post is one of the above.

Oh, and I forgot. Instead of worrying about the best round most need to worry about accuracy. You can shoot any center fire round at deer and kill them if you hit them where it counts. Also you can wound a deer with any center fire round and maybe never find it if you don't hit it where it counts.

While in most cases I would agree that whatever caliber you shoot accurately would be the best, I personally have proven that theory to be wrong. I have the 3 following Savage 99 /.308 Savage 110/30-06 and a Winchester model 70 in .270 I personally have shot 3 shot groups from the .308 that are less than 1" at 100 yards. The 30-06 is a close second. the old Winchester is a bit sloppy but I can keep 3 shots inside 4" at 100 yds. I have taken deer with all 3 at varying ranges and most shots were to point of aim +- every deer shot with the 270 is dead before it hits the ground, without fail. I have shot deer with the .308 that have gone quite a distance before giving up. Not sure of why but the .270 is deadly every time. What is interesting is the .270 is not my favorite to shoot either. It tends to rattle the fillings in my teeth, and if I shoot it more that 3 times in a row it gives me a headache.
Go figure...

+1 Best round for a 308, after you neck it down to 7mm-08, would be 120gr Ballistic tip or 140 gr Accubond. :-)
Make your firstshot count!

If you are asking if the .308 is the best deer round, I would say no, but it's in the running.
If you are asking about .308 loads for deer, I used to use the 150gr Rem Corelokt but was not thrilled with its accuracy out of my Win Model 70 (but the bullet performance was very good). I tried a few loads and the 150gr Winchester Silver Ballistic Tip load proved very accurate and has killed quite a few Mills County whitetails for me (no losses yet with that load).

Well, since you have not handicapped yourself with an itty-bitty bullet, your choices are many. Any cup and core (Core Lokt, Win. Power Point, etc...) or premium bullet (Nosler Partition, Accubond, Barnes TSX, etc.) will work fine.
I like the regular old cup and cores for whitetails.
Just stay away from varmint bullets and FMJs.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

My Savage 11/111 is happiest with Remington Express, 150 grain Core-lokt PSP. Bench shoots under an inch sized grouping at 100 yards and has killed every deer or pig that I've shot with it. I shoot under 200 yards, so I can't say how well it would do at longer distances. I tried a variety of rounds back when ammo was REALLY scarce, and the cheap Remington did the best on the range, compared to other specialty hunting rounds that were twice the cost or more.

I have never felt under powered tote'n my 308, but since my 308 is pushing 18lbs, my 300wsm at 10.5 makes most trips in the field.
175gr smk for everything but maybe brown bear, even then a single shot behind the ear is going to do the trick.... question is can you put there in the heat of the moment?????

Depends...shoot the round that is most accurate for your gun. I have a savage hog hunter 20" barrel 1 in 10 twist. Shoots Barnes .308 165g TTSX sub moa. One shot kills this year on 9 animals, 4 aoudad, 2 corsican and 3 hogs. Ranges up to 387 yards. Only 3 of the aoudad were able to make it more than 10 yards from POI. I am somewhat worried about expansion and kinetic energy dump on deer but this is due to not having seen the kill factor of them on the small hill country deer I hunt.

My .308 LTR shoots 165 grain Sierra game kings the best, so that's what I use. That is if I'm shooting the .308 instead of the .17 rem.

What no magic bullets Sure, I use them in the .22 DGS ELI still have one open up & turn to dust before it gets where it's going occasionally. The SGK works so well in my LTR I haven't tried them, still haven't got them to work in the 7-08.
