Low fence. I haven't gotten to the point as a hunter yet where I'm skilled enough to handle high fence ranches, but I'm getting there.
It takes a certain type of man to pull it off Keep the faith that one day you will achieve Very true TT85. I am starting to think that a lot on here that bash HF maybe are not yet good enough for that type of hunting.

They have the results to prove it. Instead of hating, I'm grinding to get there. No jealousy issues here.

No fence. Does that mean road hunting? Means lots of tumble weeds and snow/sand drifts

I guess I'll never be good enough to have someone lead me by the hand to a spot where I can shoot large homegrown livestock. You guys crack me up.

There is always a fence. There might not be one marking the border of your place/leased property. But there is a fence somewhere. I guess we should look at it like that tho for B&C. Just calculate the acreage that you individually pay the lease on and say "I shot my buck on '230' acres NO fence". Or for landowners, just put imaginary boundaries in your place and say it was "no fence on 3 sides. See how easy that was.... I'm now a washed in the blood, clean and pure B&C qualified hunter!

I'll hunt all three as long as I'm hunting the game, not just SHOOTING it.
Hunting a state park where the deer will take food from your hand and stand and stare at people is low fence or no fence hunting that is no different from hunting a high fence where the guide can set his watch when the buck will show up or drive you around to pick out the exotic you want that just stands and looks at you.

Even though you're not a very good hunter right now, I'd be willing to bet that even you can reach a high skill level if you're willing to put in the time and effort. Nobody said it was going to be easy. But that doesn't mean you quit trying to better yourself.

I shoot hogs in a 4'x 8' trap. I seem to be pretty good at it too. But if I don't make a good first shot they don't run so far I can't get a good quick follow up.
I won't shoot a "trophy" in a 100 acre high fence and put it on my wall but I will kill does or pigs every chance I get. Put me on a few thousand acre place though and I have a different pov. That said I just like to kill stuff. I enjoy killing, skinning, quartering, processing, grilling and eating game. I don't give a rats azz if anyone disagrees with me or not. I just laugh at you, take a drink of my beer and smile.

I like hunting the high fence. You get more bang for the $$. They take longer to cut up but it's like getting 2 low fences in one. They can serve multiple purposes too. My wife uses them to grow tall ivy and some garden plants. I use them around the house to keep out unwanted guest. I've heard their value may increase soon as the federal government is once again thinking about using them to HF America . Wonder if that will effect the B&C status, one side will have a HF

Once you get a variety of experiences you find out that hunting can be either incredibly easy or hard depending on circumstance. Fences sometimes matter sometimes they don't. I'd much rather do a spot and stalk, on a regularly hunted high fence place, over box blind deer hunt by a feeder, on a low pressure place. It's what you make of it; you have to please yourself.

I have some Mouflons in a HF. If you think getting one is easier than in a LF you don't know Jack.

Nothing against HF or people that hunt HF ranches. Just not for me. I suppose if it was a very large place I'd give it a try, but like someone else said, I'd want it to be a hunt, not a shoot. For the record, I've never shot a deer standing at a feeder, not saying I havent used them, but all my stand/blind locations were scouted and on travel lanes.

You've changed the rules to satisfy your sense of what's fair. You can do the exact same thing hunting HF, don't hunt over feeders, maybe do spot and stalk. The biggest determinate is the species wariness and the degree too which they are habituated to people.

The biggest determinate is the species wariness and the degree too which they are habituated to people. Was just stating that to avoid an argument about feeders. One could argue hunting at a feeder is a "shoot" and not a hunt. Also, I prefer a spot and stalk, thats why I mentioned it would have to be a very large HF ranch before I would consider it. I dont see the fun in chasing a buck in a 500 acre enclosure. Some dont mind, thats their prerogative.

When I was younger I didn't care but in recent years the low fences are much easier to crawl over.

Everyone has their standards, but I'd rather chase a Japanese Sika around a brushy 500 acre HF, then hunt Barren Ground Caribou. The attraction of a Caribou hunt is the country itself, not the difficulty of the hunt, hit it right and it's easy. Japanese Sika if not habituated to man, are naturally wary and tough to stalk, add in other non target animals and stalks become much tougher. I'm sure you noticed some qualifiers but every hunt is like that, there are some easy hunts and some hard ones. We control the difficulty of the hunts we choose to participate in, if the animal is easy, we can choose a more difficult method or be more choosy in our trophy selection, perhaps we choose only the most difficult of terrain. My point is, that there are a lot of factors that go into a memorable hunt, presence or absence of a fence is only one of them.
