Do you guys recommend soft point, FMJ, or...? I'd go with soft points or some of the other types of hunting bullets. I wouldn't recommend varmint type bullets of FMJ bullets. Will they kill a pig? Yes with the proper shot placement, but hunting type bullets give you a better chance for those less than proper shots.

75 gr HPBT is a nice bullet. The main thing is finding the bullet your gun likes. Accuracy first.

I load Hornady 55 grain soft points for hogs in my AR. I have some 60 and 70 grain loads for my Mossberg MVP Patrol rifle.

Or field experience after killing hundreds of Hogs?

I use vmax most of the time just because they are cheap. There are way better suited bullets like Barnes or soft points 55 and up.

I have pretty much settled on the 63 grain Federal American Eagle soft points. Great balance between cost and effectiveness. No telling how many bullets I have tried but I keep coming back to the AE soft point. The only problem is its getting harder and harder to find.

Depends on if you are just killing them or if you want to find them too. If you just want to kill them, who cares? If you want to find them, use a decent hunting bullet if you insist on using a little cartridge for a tough animal that can get up to 300 lbs. Better yet, use a bigger gun.

I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Or field experience after killing hundreds of Hogs? like pappy always says: proof tis in the pudding an he been pudding his video's on here. I've hit some big hogs with 30-30 good blood trail & spent up to 4+ hours tracking & never found the hog. edited: old habits hard to break, heart lung shots. it is in wild not target &lots of veribles, heart lung has MRE room for error. friend & I jumped bedded hog it ran past me 20 maybe less yards, my shot was little back, slowed down hog. ended it with second shot using .223 55gr FM, snow on ground, for heck of it checked trial it left, no blood trail. with .223 heart lung may not be best place to shoot a hog small entry, very little energy. not good blood trail most will be inside cavity. when using .223 take close range shots for that reason. did get some .223 55gr. hps yet to give them a chance. friend took a smaller hog with same round, close range. Would like ta hear input on .55gr hps already know its light round shot placement is key, it will be taken short range

Based on finding them in the field where I shoot them or by the buzzards the next day. I don't have thermals to find them after I shoot them. Until last week I didn't have a night vision scope to shoot them with either or a suppressor. Weapon mounted lights only. Dead is dead, but it's like everyone says "if you don't have a picture you didn't kill it". We hunt out of a truck and after the shooting starts we start chasing them to stay on them. It always amazes me how far hogs can run after they've been shot when you're chasing them vs not chasing them. We'll probably stop doing that after we get another night vision scope to use. While I have personally not killed hundreds of hogs by myself. The core group of two or three guys I hunt with have killed hundreds of hogs. We kill hogs all the time that look like they've been shot before. A couple even look like they've been hit by a car/truck. We see other types of scars too, maybe fight scars IDK. We don't do autopsy's on them to figure it out.
edit: the one guy use a 6.8 and the other a .308. Of coarse they have much better luck putting them down regardless of bullet type. Ear hole or spine shot doesn't really matter what type bullet you're using they'll drop right there.
