My brother, not Mr. Management, shot two eights the same morning and both had a broken main beam. Not sure what the problem is though.

Dozer, mulched, and trackhoe work. Fencelines, senderos, tanks. Let me know if I can help with any dirtwork or construction.

If all deer had brittle antlers most hunters would be in trouble. Then again, a hammer would be an item in the hunting pack..THUD ....antlerless I won't shoot one that is broken up on the place we hunt on the 1 buck county. The 10 this year ought to be a nice mid-140's buck next year and the 8 should be low 130's....if only I could find one of those things they put around a dog's head after getting stitches, I think I could get a good rack out of both of them.

I hunt Northwest of Elbert in Throckmorton county, and noticed a bunch of bucks with broken tines. THis is a good indication of a nice Buck to Doe ratio. Lots of bucks having to fight for the right to breed results in broken antlers. I shot a Heavy 14 point in late November, and even he had 5 broken tines, but his breaks were basically 2-5 inches from the tips on the tines where they were broken, so really not too bad. Not bad enough broken to merit passing him up!LOL He was old enough in my opinion to go ahead and take him, so the Taxidermist can sort him out!

We have seen a bunch of solid 2 and 3 year old bucks that had their antlers mangled from fighting.

Everyone keeps saying "fighting"...do they not fight every year? I think that it's a fair and obvious assesment to say that fighting is the cause of a lot of broken antlers, but due to the frequency of broken antlers I don't think it's the reason. I just don't believe that deer have become that much more baddaz since last year and that they are whoopin' on each other harder.

Yes, no Scat, it is fighting, but a buck does not have to fight in order to breed! If you have a bunch of doe on your property, and there's plenty to go around, you will see less damage to antlers, because there is less confrontation for the right to breed. Now, with a buck to doe ratio of say 1:2 or 1:1 you will absolutely have broken tines because the bucks have to fight off others to get a chance to breed. That's just the way it is

I have pictures of a 9 point from before the season that was a 3.5 point when I saw him in Nov. One main beam was snapped off and the points on the other side were busted up as well. This is in the panhandle. My brother who hunts in the panhandle on a different place said his bucks were all broken up this year as well.

My guess is that it's a combination of fewer does and an off year nutrition wise.

Last night...counted 48 does on a wheat field, 5 bucks. Three of the five had broken horns. 2 main beams the other an 8 with broken brow and a broken G2. What's my ratio? It's about the same as last year's ratio. Don't recall seeing but one deer last year that had anything broken.

How am i supposed to know the ratio of your place, BTW do all of your does go into heat simultaneously? It's a lot of work to find out a true buck to doe population, and it's not as easy as sitting one evening on a wheat field and counting the number of deer you see, and their sex.

But that might just keep them alive for next year if they have a broken horn....so it might just be a blessing! That is unless some goober shoots a broken deer!

I know an 0x5 that we almost took just because of his good side... if he stays around until next year he'll be HUGE and he'll also have an arrow sticking out of him

I know Jake...just givin' you a hard time. We do 4 surveys a year. 3 driven from late late July to October and then a helicopter survey each October. Our ratio the last couple of years has been something like 7.2 to 1. We've got tons of deer and tons of does. We have 85-100 management tags a year but have not taken as many does as we need to. Of course there were only 7 bucks taken off of our place last year.

I can see where it would be extremely difficult to fill all of those management tags, but it would help if you could.

No doubt, but who the heck wants to gut 80 deer a year. Now they've started charging $40 a piece to donate them. I'm not going to leave them laying. We've still got a lot of mature bucks the only reason for a mass doe slaying would be to force more of those bucks out in shooting hours. Seems a bit selfish in the grand scheme of things. The big boys are there. They're just harder to hunt.
