Hey everyone. I just wanted to get as much information from possible on whether or not your wife ( or yourself if you are female) ate venison while pregnant. Have you heard anything about it not being safe of experienced any complications with it?

My wife had absolutely no problems, and we eat a LOT of venison.
I have never heard of any reason for it to be an issue of concern, either.

Haven't heard of any cause for alarm and my wife's doctor said it was better than processed meat bought at the store.
Word to the wise...cook it outside. There are certain smells that will effect your wife in a way that she will never eat that good again, even after she has had the kid. When my wife was pregnant, I cooked everything except the vegetables outside.

With two whole posts surely you understand. On this forum that sounds like a question a Peta follower would ask. Nothing against you, its just odd to us.

Well, the only way to get my post count up is to post right? :-) We have a venison cook book that states " Any woman who is pregnant is probably best advised to avoid eating venison during the course of her pregnancy. This is because of a fairly common, though often misunderstood, disease known as toxoplasmosis. It is commonly acquired through eating undercooked meat. A woman who becomes infected during pregnancy risks major problems with the fetus she is carrying including death, brain damage, hydrocephalus, jaundice, or convulsions at or shortly after birth. I'm not sure how to read that as a first time parent and not become concerned enough to look further. There is not a lot of research out there on the topic so the most logical place I thought of to ask was a hunting forum full of people who have "been there done that." Trust me, no PETA members in our household. We pride ourselves by filling our freezer with animals we have taken from our property.
Shoot straight, shoot true

I think the takeaway there is to avoid eating raw or undercooked meat.

Some of the finest protein on the planet hands down! Many families were nourished with nothing but free range wild game. In this day and age of "Organic" it really doesn't get more organic than venison.

When my wife was pregnant, I cooked everything except the vegetables outside. This. Good advice. If it makes your wife uncomfortable, she shouldn't eat it even if just for peace of mind. It's a legitimate question, but I think the risks are removed if the meat is thoroughly cooked. The problem is venison is best medium rare.

in doing a little quick research, you can get toxoplasmosis from meat (not just venison) that is not fully cooked or has not been frozen. additionally, cats are the only live carriers of toxoplasmosis and when a cat is infected, it's feces contain toxoplasma eggs for about 2 weeks. these eggs can survive in moist soil for up to 18 months. These eggs in soil or sand can also contaminate food and water. Futhermore, cats that never go outside and do not catch mice indoors cannot be infected with toxoplasmosis.

I think the point is you can contract from undercooked meat that has not been frozen regardless what type of animal it comes from ...

I ate it while I was pregnant. Just make sure she takes in a bunch of fiber as I got hemorrhoids badly.
