Just got back from my trek to the pasture. My route is about a mile. The pasture road makes a loop from the house, off the hill to the creek. along a draw, back up a gentle slope to the house. Now that I am back to walking,it will take me a week or so before I can reverse the course and tackle the hill at the end. Too much backsliding to start off like that.

By the way, my two dogs want me to say "Thank you!" to whoever got me off my rear and back to walking. They had more fun then I did. grin

Not too break anybodies bubble about getting into aand STAYING with a program in prep for a trip to the Rockies...

Some many years back, a buddy made this same pilgrimmage ya'll are attempting...only he was about 40 at the time 6'/5"s & skinny at about 240-250. Had been a 3 sport 4 year letterman, football/track & basketball but excelled as wide receiver at Wichita State...but at 40 drank like a fish and smoked like he was trying to melt Iron Ore into steel. Any way was doing 5+ miles a day running the entire way. Got up to Eagle - just outside Aspen - a day early to meet the Outfitter and walked the knots out of his legs from the straight thru drive by himslef...and the altitude like to have made him turn around and drive back to Dallas.. for all the under 1k altitude heavy training he'd done he had NOT run the stadium steps like everyone who'd been to the Rockies told him over and over and over.

Another close friend used to guide on the Western Slope & north of Glenwood Springs and what became the Interstate...and ran the stadium steps with a 80 lb back pack on at the old Bronco Stadium in Denver for 3-4 hours a day when he could finally work up to it every year as his prep...but then his Hunt Area base camps were all above 7-8K feet and hunted up to past tree line. When I hunted with him down here he could smoke a pack, drink a Large Red Go Cup of 1/2 & 1/2 gin & tonic ... and walk me down in the 1st mile talking the entire time...but then I never did get back into shape the way I was working construction right after High School & later on the freight docks at under 25-26. Graduated HS at 5'8" & 137 lbs at 17.

Came off the truck docks in May of 1970 at 5'10" 205lb 32" waist and wore a size 52 suit coat....from a 36" waist 165/170lbs and 40-42 Reg suit coat when I started the job 3 years earlier. My contract quota on the docks was to move by hand a minimum 51K's freight every nite busting out 52'box's and still go to college 9-12 hours a semester minimum at the same time. Rain or Shine Hot or Cold with no AC or Heat in the open walled but covered dock.

When you get into your program...go find a high school stadium and start by running full out around the outside at least one lap, then run all the steps up & down using a side stepping descent and change sides every other staircase all the way around, and finish with another lap around the outside. When my youngest played Mens Soccer at San Jose State that was the warm up drill, then they had a 3 hour practice, and did the run the stadium thing again as a Cool Off. I could see his quads flex sitting halfway up th stands and him running down the opposite side sidelines to make a play. Football teaches you build bulk...Soccer teaches you to build endurance to run full out for 90 minutes a play the game too.
Ron

Rifleman, what is that Insanity like?

Keep in mind, my biggest challenge is being stuck on a caliche pad for 5-6 days at a time, on average, round the clock. I don't have a gym or even a clean floor out here. I have the room to walk and run, and I'm even fortunate enough to have some decent hills to climb. But I am limited to that, most days. For my one to two days a week at home, I have more options, but hardcore workouts aren't a weekend thing, I'm sure.

I'm dealing with probably a slight torn meniscus in my left knee. Going to therapy with all the old people, doing the exercises, plus walking 2 miles about 3 times a week. Before this knee I was regularly walking 5K (5K sounds so much further than 3.1 miles) up and down pretty steep hills in my neighborhood. I also do pushups - not a lot - but a decent amount for me.

Gave up dessert for Lent and have lost a few pounds. Will have to mostly stay off of them after Easter. We've quit buying chips, there are none in my house. (I'll admit, when I walk past the chip and dip aisle I feel like I'm driving by an old girl friend's house. You know the one. The one you wouldn't dare take home to meet the folks, but she sure was a lot of fun.)

Trying to decide if the knee is getting better or if I should just get it scoped and fixed, or just cowboy up and decide it comes with being in my 50's. If I can get it fixed, I will tackle stairs regularly. I might even get that dam trumpet out and go through the lung buster exercises - a unique way to train your lungs.

I have to walk my last daughter down the aisle at the end of May. I have a walking hunt in late August and this hunt in October. I've hunted elk before and I know what it takes. I will bow out if I feel like I'm going to be a burden to anybody.

As a side note, on our hunt thread, I brought up whiskey and cigars just as a way to get the thread moving again. Yes, I will bring whiskey and cigars, to be enjoyed in strict moderation by any and all legal adults that desire to. I like to joke and have fun, but I will be 110% focused on Cervus canadensis nelsoni.

I tried out my hill this evening. Went much better than I thought it would. The supplements, water, and stretching made a difference. They had to. Normally, one trip up a hill like that would do me in, especially my joints. They didn't bother me at all, I made 4 trips up and down, and finished with a few laps around the location, all walking. I got my heart rate up pretty good, got my lungs and legs to burning, and felt good doing it. I could have done more, but my throat started hurting since I'm just getting over a head cold, and I didn't want to overdo it. The other wireline crew will be here in the morning, and they're all on a workout kick, so I'll go at it again with them. I feel pretty great about how it went, particularly how good my joints felt. Really makes me look forward to doing more, since it won't be so painful.

There was a nice view up there, too.

Take care of that knee. Doesn't matter how fit you are if you're hopping around on one leg.

I'll look into it, then. If I can get a group of guys to do it, it might happen. I'm not going to be rolling around out here by myself, having everyone think that the long hours finally got to me.

I'll watch that video when I have time to drive up on the ridge and get service. I feel pretty certain I should watch that.

I'm on it. Got a pair that's just about broke in, and I've got another pair that I have picked out that I just need to go try on and see if they're as good as I think they'll be. Then I'll break those in, too.

Hell, I'm 17 workin' on 18, and workout everyday, eat nothing but healthy food, and literally live a bodybuilder's lifestyle, but don't have a bodybuilder's body quite yet, haha.

I'm really looking forward to this trip!

West Texas is a special place but most folks don't slow down long enough to find spots like that.

I'm 71 and not really interested in getting in shape for a Colorado Elk hunt but we filled feeders today and saw deer, raccoon, hogs, a redbird, lots of jackrabbits, heard dove talking to each other and saw a day old baby calf. I just want to be able to keep on doing what I am doing for a long time.

I can assure you, when I reached that spot, I had no problem slowing down for a few minutes.

Made the hike up Romero Canyon and to the top of a Mountain in Tucson a few weeks ago. It kicked my butt, but I want to get back again soon.

14.5 mile hike, and 6000 foot elevation the view was beautiful.

Same here. And I believe a team effort can do wonders. Keep your eyes on the prize. I have a "SNEAKY" suspicion that this deal is going to work out just fine.

AEB, last year I shared camp with a man i have spoke with over the last 25 years (while in Colorado hunting or when I lived there) He and his wife have been hunting there for alooong time. They drive their RV up from Uvalde. He is 83!! A great couple to share camp with and die hard hunters. I told him this past year, that I hope to at least be able to enjoy the outdoors at his age, he replied "Just know your limitations and plan for it" Just a great couple to hang out with.

Good deal. Keep it up.

Worst thing I did was let myself get out of shape. 2nd worst thing I did was let it happen again. Not this time.
