The photos were taken in the mountains around Aspen, Colorado. There is a studio name on the back of the print which is mostly unreadable.

Neat photo!
Don't know what the Indian situation was around Aspen but in 1867 the native Americans were still fighting like crazy on the frontier. Aspen was definitely the frontier at that time. Likely they were the hunted as well as the hunters.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Cool pic's. Really unusual Elk rack. Looks more like a red stag rack.

Likely they were the hunted as well as the hunters. He mentioned seeing Indians in some of his letters to his wife and child who lived in Cripple Creek, Colorado. He did not mention particular tribes but there were Utes and Northern Cheyenne in that area.

That's amazing history. I wish we still hunted on horseback to be honest.

When I lived on the ranch we always hunted on horseback. The ranch was so big, 20 sections, and so rugged we had to use horses to get to the mountains where we hunted. We ran into wild camels from time to time. They were used experimentally by the army in that area around the turn of the century. It didn't work out so they just turned them loose. The camels we saw were descendents of those camels. We also ran into Chicle donkeys packed with raw gum coming to the Chicle gum factory from Mexico. They were tied together in long strings and trained to follow set trails. There were no wranglers with them. You could hear the bells tied to their necks for miles. And yes, the Marfa lights exist. I have seen them while out hunting.
