I agree that it is not anything particularly special. BUT, it is a good one-time experience. If I had not been before, I'd go once for sure.

o·ver·rated
verb past tense: overrated; past participle: overrated 1. have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved, i.e. Joe T. Garcias "dismissing the work as pompous and overrated" synonyms: overestimate, overvalue, think too much of, attach too much importance to, praise too highly

Ok here's the deal on Joe T's and it' comes down to one word....expectations. Been going there for 55 years. Back in the day they didn't have a menu and served only one thing, the family style Mexican Dinner which consists of frijoles, guacamole, Spanish rice, tacos, enchiladas, and nachos along with chips hot sauce and corn tortillas. End of menu, period. The place, going since 1935, has gone from six tables to three blocks of property and is run by the great grand children. Some 120 employees, 4 kitchens and not a freezer anywhere. Along comes franchised restaurants and their menus that push these same ingredients in different shapes and everyone bashes Joe T's. If your interested in fajitas or anything other than the family style dinner then don't go there. If you want fresh food, a stout margarita, and a lovely evening on their patio then join the thousands that enjoy there food, atmosphere and prompt service. Again, taste is taste.

I don't know what Marg's you have been drinking, but they def. are NOT strong. The only accept cash, so I hope they get audited every year because I know where that money is going! The food is sub par, with the fajitas being the best and quickest meal to order. They always seem to add things we never order when we are in a large group.
Do yourself a favor and find another restaurant!

I ate there once. Fajitas tasted like over marinated dog jerky. It was the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. I'm not sure how the place is still in business.

First tine to eat there was probably 40 years ago. Gave up on it after a few trips. Gave them another chance 20 years ago. Blah!!! And that was long before there was a Taco Tomaine on every street corner. There is just nothing special about their food! On the other hand, their other little place around the corner (Esperanza's) is pretty darned good. You are right about taste....and Esperanza's has taste.

Worse food ever. Tourist trap. Now easy there Tonto. You need to manage your expectations. The food is so so. The atmosphere, margaritas and eye candy are all above average. The outside seating is as good as it gets. 4W
