Hello Folks,

For years I wanted to plant a food plot using lighter equipment pulled behind an atv and not a tractor. Has anyone ever made a homemade plow or ground breaker?? I attempted 3 years ago by putting carriage bolts through a 2x6 every 8" and put 3 feed backs on top for weight. However, this just ended up bending the carriage bolts backwards and never broke the ground. This year i plan to spray round up to kill everything but need something (preferably homemade) to help break the ground some. I know it won't do nearly what a have plow and tractor can do but i want something a little simpler. Please let me know you have heard or build any homemade farm equipment.

How big of plot are you wanting to do? What area are you in?

angle iron and welded pegs to the bottom. we had some old weights laying around and tie wired those on top to dig in deep. it really just scratches the ground really good. throw seed down and go over it again.

I would be carful spraying roundup then planting a food plot. don't know how long that stuff last and could possibly kill everything you try to plant. again I am no expert about round up but I do know it kills everything. good luck to you.

Some pipe, cut some holes and weld RR spikes.

I like the RR spike idea, (I would weld them with 3/4 of the length for digging) that would work, but I think you would need a few rows. What you are trying to make would be a "drag harrow", you wont get much depth, but it will do in a pinch.

Consider the wear and tear on you're 4 wheeler too, what would it cost to repair the tranny? May be cheaper to rent a small 30-40hp tractor with a disk, especially if you're talking something bigger than a couple acres.

on the round-up just wait a week to plant, two if you wanna be safe, but round up only kills live/growing plants, it wont affect the seed....

my buddy bought this last summer, it worked well as a drag and we are hoping that adding some weight to it will break some ground this spring. pulled it no problem with a 350cc honda

I have seen discers that are small enough to be pulled with a 4 wheeler, just can't remember where. Try looking at the lawn tractor sections at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Doing plots with that type of equipment is tuff. Main thing is you need enough weight on the disc to get it to cut but also be able to keep it balanced enough to run at a decent speed. I have a disc like that id be willing to let go and will put pictures up of it. I finally just got a cheaper tractor that can pull a decent size disc... when you figure up the time/ fuel/ and strain on the 4wheeler its hard to justify it. but it can be done. What is your budget? I may have a tractor that can fit what your looking for. Here is the disc.

well thought I had a better pic its the thing to the left that looks like a cannon lol I had to put an old pipe with concrete on it to make the disc heavy enough... its just angle iron with 4disc blades on it and a receiver hitch.

We have a tractor, plow, discs, and packer. 5 years ago i planted oats in a 3-4 acre field. It was alot of time (i won't say work since the tractor did it all).

However the tractor is bigger and harder to work with. This year i want to explore new areas and actually get in woods to hunt instead of out in the openings. Because of this, i don't want to move the tractor all over the place with the plow, disc, etc. I just want to plant some small area i would hunt.

I have heard people using the scratch method however i have not considered wear and tear. I also do not have a welder but have thought of alternatives (that probably won't work). My friend used this method with welded on spike drag and planted a 1/4 acre plot and shot his biggest deer on it. I'm going for that.

Rent the equipment from a tractor dealer that has rentals.

These are some homemade ones I use for small food plots. That 100 lb tractor weight makes the difference.

I used one of them to break the ground a bit to plant the wheat in this pic and cover the seed.

Check out this site All-in-one from 36" to 72". GV36 would work behind a 4 wheeler

you can always just broadcast the seed.. for a 1/4 acre I would just spend the money that your going to use in fuel and building the equipment to buy more seed and broadcast that spot heavy... I broadcast oats in this spot every year and it comes up well

times on the camera are wrong... this is before and after

He did not have a corn feeder and it was behind his house a ways (but still visible, if that makes sense). Its hard to beat a tractor and we have the equipment to do food plots. It just may take longer and won't get me into area's I would like to go. We do have another piece of equipment which i thought of using the bucket to scratch the ground but this is similar to using the tractor (big and slow). From peoples comments it seems best to just use what i currently have.
