get quality be it a high fence place or a good lease that you have to
put a lot of money in to raise the quality of deer.

If you rarely have gas money, then your really not making good choices.

If your intention is to prove spending money with a hunting operation make sense, then why call the man a "joke"? That doesn't sound reasonable or intelligent when your argument starts like that.

don k, it's interesting what you said about work after retirement. I see the same thing on our little ranch. If anything, and I mean anything, needs fixing I'll be the guy that fixes it.

And on the cost of having hunting on a place, there's just no telling what it costs me per pound on any buck I might shoot.

Don, always heard good things about your place. You charge very reasonable rates, and treat hunters just right. Your one complaint sounds like somebody who simply lacks taking responsibility for his own actions, a big problem in America these days.

If I wasn't fortunate enough to have a small lease I'd definitely come hunt with you. Keep up the good work and congrats on a good year.

I don't get it either. I wasn't bashing anybody. Just trying to show how the other guy might have felt. I'm definitely not faulting the landowner. I may not make a lot of money, but I do know a little about business. There are only two was to make a lot of money. One is to sell to everyone at affordable and move a lot of volume. The other is to sell only to the rich at high prices, knowing you won't sell much, but charging enough that you don't have to. I certainly see that the OP here is not getting rich from his operation at his prices. I really think the situation was just a matter of the poor guy having different hopes than what he could get there and didn't realize what he was getting into. Don't think it was anyone's fault.

I kinda look back and see the only two times I got to deer hunt as a kid. Each time my dad scratched up enough money to pay for one day on a day lease for both of us. They were both too good to be true ads in the thrifty nickel. The first one turned out to be shady illegal subleasing so we left after paying, and the second one was exactly what you could expect at that price. I find no fault with the land owner and don't think he treated the hunter unfairly, I just empathized with the guy cause I kinda know how he might have felt. I don't see how that offended anyone. I even said that that particular type of complaint shouldn't negatively impact his business.

As far as spending more than $300 to hunt my free places is concerned, of course I do! That said, I get a lot of bang for my buck. If I had to pay $300 extra per kill for management deer it would be a real stretch. All of my hog, muledeer, bird and coyote spots are within twenty miles of my house and as far as whitetail, since my friends have to be there anyway, or it's behind my in-law's house, I can split fuel and schedule around holidays so that fuel is either cheap or would have been spent anyway, and there is no lodging cost. I currently am pressured to hunt this way out of circumstance, but there is actually a lot to like about it. On the friend's family places it is just management deer, but I'm not paying for them, and the owners are usually happy to have someone who will burn a tag on a management deer. Behind the in-laws I can shoot what I want but there isn't much there, same goes for public land. To me, I enjoy hunting those kinds of places, or public land close to them and know that I'm really hunting and not shooting live-stock. I also like the fact that there is nothing certain about it like sitting in a blind over a feeder inside of high fence. I believe in business and the right of a land owner to make hunting a business, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for anyway. I'm not whining about the fact that I don't have that kind of money to hunt. Again, I'm not saying that a land owner shouldn't be able to do it that way. I have quite a few friends whose family has land and most of them don't get to hunt it because sometimes the only difference between making a profit and having to sell the ranch is the fact that some hunters will pay good money to lease it. For those who don't lease it and let me hunt I'm grateful and to those who do lease it, I understand. One day when I can afford to lease a place, I want a big place with plenty of deer, but I want it to feel wild and natural, not a small high fence place with careful breeding and timed feeders and a different price for every deer. That's a personal thing. More power to anyone who wants to do it differently.

Don I wanna make it clear that I'm not bashing you. With a place your size and the prices you quoted, I don't see you even make a living. I'm happy for you to charge whatever you want for whatever deer you want, and I don't even think you handled anything incorrectly. You seem to be a very reasonable person. I was just saying that maybe $300 was a lot of money to that guy, and maybe he hadn't realized the experience that was going to get him. A later post by you made it clear that I was probably wrong about that. For me personally, it's not exactly the experience I look for even if I was swimming in cash, and I was just saying that maybe that guy would have been happier with a different kind of place and didn't realize it till it was over. It sounds like you did your best to let him know what he was getting, so I don't find any fault with you.

It sounded to me like a guy wanting more than what he agreed to after the fact

It happens all the time. Has nothing to do with money, social status, etc

Sure do wish my student loans were only $581 a month. Or my truck payment was only $370.

Try this on for size. $800/month student loans and $1000/month truck payment.... and it's only me.

Doesn't keep me from hunting though. Truth of the matter is, if you want to hunt bad enough, you find a way. Period.

As for you Don... at those prices, anyone who complains deserves a throat punch IMO

Because I'm not gonna pay that and NOT drive it. It'll be payed off fairly quickly. It's just a 2013 f150 supercrew, fx4, every single option available. Ordered it built exactly how I wanted it.

As far as the student loans go... parent's weren't able to help me through college, so I had to do it all on my own. I'll be making tuition payments LONG after the truck is payed off. I have 1.5 years left on the truck..... 8 on student loans.

Pretty shocked some of yall don't pay this much on yall's vehicle payments. Granted, I don't HAVE to pay $1000 a month... but I do.

I do, however, make more $ than every single member of my family. Immediate and extended...combined. No complaints here, lol.

Oh ya, well I make more than a couple homeless people I saw down the road so THERE, HA! Gotcha now!

Just kiddin, I don't blame you for paying it off early. I just thought you HAD to pay that much. Kudos to you sir

So your truck payments arnt $1000k/month. You are choosing to pay that to pay down on principal

Curious as to what you do to make more than every member of your family combined.

Dunno but it sounds like he earned it with a lot of schooling. Deer hunting is expensive. I hate that it's become a pay to play past time but there's no going back now.
