Anyone got any good stories or pics of any mishaps that have occurred during a waterfowl trip? Im sure we can get a few laughs out of this or maybe even some safety tips/ pointers and stuff to watch out for....

I've taken a dunk a few times in the waders, but I think pretty much anyone who has been doing it long enough has done that once or twice

I can't even begin to tell all my fails. Add the ones when I regularly used the phrase "Hold my beer and watch this" and you're going I be here a while.

I've got a few that were just dumb moves on my part.

The most recent that actually gave me a scare was walking/scouting a wetland and it went from knee deep to armpits in a step. A narrow and deep beaver run. Luckily, dropped my gun (in shallows) and crawled out.

I went on a retrieve for a teal a couple years ago(took the gun cause he was trying to get away), got almost back to my blind when the firmness of the bottom went from mud to solid in one step. I slipped and fell forward sending my gun and duck about 5 feet in front of me in the water. This was in January but luckily for me the air was fairly warm like it is today... That water was darn cold though... I was solo on this hunt and I actually had an extra shirt in my bag so I used it to wipe/dry my gun off. I was wet/coldish the rest of the hunt but I got my first limit on that hunt. Good memories!

I NEED A DOG, EH????

Not my story but my brothers, well, our story...

We use our yaks to get to our spots. One day we paddled down a canal for about a mile before our spot. on the way out, my brother says he thinks he's taking on water. I look and sure enough, his drain plug is out. He decided to pull to the edge of the canal and jump out, pull the boat onshore and flip it to drain the water. Unknown to him, the mud in that canal is as deep as the grand canyon. He checked with his paddle but apparantly the top layer was semi compact. He jumped overboard and sank to his nipples(the water was only like a foot deep) so he was about 3.5' in mud... He began to panic and actually sunk deeper. After some swift thinking, I held his boat steady and he used it for leverage and crawled onto the side of it. Had I not been there, he may have lost ahold of his boat and may not be here today! Which would not be cool! Anyways, he got back in and then exited on the actual shoreline instead of 2-3' off the shoreline...

Was walking up a slew on a 100 acre lake I leased in high school I was going to cross it and the water was only 6 inches deep because I could see the bottom. Well first step was solid second step not to bad third step a little soft and by the fourth I was up to my chest in mud. My buddy was at other end of lake and no way he could hear me. Shot my gun, but that was a waste because I'm sure he just thought I kicked up ducks. Well I couldn't move but i didnt panic. I had an 870 ( it was first year steel shot was state wide and only gun that shot 3 inch ) well I leaned forward and stuck that 870 in the mud kicked my feet back and kind of floated out of that mud and used that gun to drag me out. Had on those old canvas waders with a belt and hardly got wet. It was scary though. Btw you know how much I paid for that 100 acre lake?? $150.00 for the season! I felt it was a fair price back then.

Another time in high school I was hunting with my friend at his lease. It was cold and he had a core lake and part of it was froze. Well he had a lab that broke about 99% of the time. Well we shot a duck that went down on the ice and his ole dog broke as usuall and ran on the ice to get it! Coming back the ice gave way and the dog fell In. My buddy just got that deer in the headlight look and froze wih panic as his dog would pull himself half way out then slide back in. I tried to get to him but it was too deep. So I get back to sure and find a long stick and reach out as far as I can and start thrashing that ice. I was able to break it to the dog and he swam out. The dog was saved! This was back in the day before neoprene vest.

Realizing keys are locked in the truck after wading to the knees with no waders in 30 degree weather. Made for a long 2 hours waiting for the locksmith. Next time I'll shoot the window out.

I didn't pattern my gun with some new shells I bought. I'm pretty sure there was a hole in my pattern and the shot went all around the bird but failed to hit it.

Thanksgiving morning a few years ago. Fell completely under water in a beaver hole arranging dekes. A front was blowing through and it got down to the mid 20's with a 30+ MPH north wind. Luckily I had taken off my jacket so it was dry. Took off my wet shirts, put my jacket back on and tucked it into my waders. Thought about leaving but 10 minutes later the couple gallons of water in my waders warmed up.

Glad I stayed, turned out to be one heck of a hunt, which is what made it even more memorable.

Kept my waders on til I got home. When I took 'em off I was steaming up so much I could hardly see.

Out teal hunting on Lake X this year I had to go for a swim.
Put the boat about 200 yards down the bank and I swear I got it up far enough on there that it wasn't going anywhere. Well when I got back to the spot I looked over and the boat was about 5 foot from the bank. The wake from running the boat over there must have pushed it off. The wind was blowing just enough to push it across the bank about 30 yards. No way to walk around for miles. Luckily she hit the other bank and stopped and I knew I was going to have to swim for it. So I stripped down to my underwear and went for it. I'm pretty sure I could hear the laughing from the blind 200 yards away. Drove the boat back in my underwear and put out the anchor and trolling motor and damn near dry docked the thing.
Every time now I put out the anchor and the tm and drop the trim down to sink the engine if its shallow enough. It was funny in teal season but at best it could ruin a trip in cold weather or get you hypothermia.

That's scary stuff right there. I had something similar to that happen to me. Was hunting with Gary's(Gdogg)son while Gary and Garrett were at another spot. We put out decoys and then he had to take the 4 wheeler back a pretty good ways. As soon as he left I tried wading across this runoff area...I sunk down quick and was completely stuck. I started yelling but realized he was a ways away. I decided that it might be a really long 15 minutes but it's best if I just sit tight and don't try to get out and wait for the kid. Thankfully he came back and helped me out. The kid saved my life. If I were alone I'm thinking it's 50/50 that I would have been able to get out myself. Pretty humbling.

Trying to follow my buddies trail to the X through high weeds then along the lake shore and I missed the part he said stop at. That was about 30 min before LST and we didn't have anything out yet. Farted around trying to get it out for a few then just left it and set up real quick. Took another truck with a tow rope and a few cuss words to get it out. Thank goodness for skid plates!

Forgot to mention my truck drove like it was missing a wheel for a few days till I dropped about 10lbs of dry mud in the parking lot at work.

I was chasing down a wounded duck across the cove in the boat, I pulled up to the bank really quick, and jumped out the back of the boat without seeing how deep it was first. It was over my head.

Both those trucks look super clean for "stuck trucks". I got semi stuck the other day...lucky a few guys pushing as I rocked it was all it too but my truck looked like about 10 mud bombs went off all around it...I got mud on the windshield even.

Hunting the white river in AR one year. Water was up and running fast. Boat ramp was under water and we were launching directly off the country road. I'm standing upstream of the boat, guiding it on the trailer. I hear a yelp and look up and see my buddy go floating down the river. I'm not sure how or what I did, I just remember clearing the boat, diving into the water and grabbing him by the back strap of his waders and pulling him onto the shore line. He was speechless!

We found out later that he had been standing downstream of the boat and it shifted. He got hit by the 200hp outboard and knocked off his feet.

My Buddies and I Mistakenly thought our truck could swim while en route to the X. It had rained hard the night before, and the road had what we thought was a puddle, and turned out to be more of a pond. Took us several hours to get this one out with the closest tree more than 100 feet back and an old ropes that kept breaking and causing the truck to roll right back in. But we still managed to get a few ducks that morning.

went out looking on foot the other day at Lake X. Hadnt been there in a year and didnt know what to expect but the smart weed had really grown up! Anyhow was closing in on a better looking area holding some birds when the ground below my feet starting getting soft...like quick sand! Next thing i know im up to my nads in the mud. Long story short, i had to use my gun, dog and crawl my butt out there. Long walk back to the truck soaking wet but made it out. Drove home in my boxers!
