I shot a doe tonight at 150yds, with my 25/06, Hornady 117 grain sst. Hit the doe a little back, and she ran 60 yds. My complaint is there was little to no blood, and no exit wound, It's almost like the bullet just grenaded inside her. Any body else have this problem?

They tend to explode pretty good. Thats why many people dont like them. I like them because of that. I have never had an animal go more than about 10 yards. Dropped a buck at 585 with one. Had no exit but found about 40% of the bullet and the rest of it exploded. Pretty nasty round. If your gun is set up for the SST just try the Interbond, the BC and speed are identical, my gun did not like them quite as well but they hold together really well

Every deer I have shot with an SST has died quickly; however, I often had bullet fragments cause gut trauma on an otherwise clean, thorax shot making field dressing messy and unpleasant.

They are for sure messy but they get the job done.

You got your deer, but hard to judge a bullet when you hit it "far back". If it would have dropped , would you be telling us? I have no special love of sst but shot placement was off.

It was messy for me too, just wish the deer would have left a good blood trail, happy with the end result though.

Try Nosler Accubonds, dang good bullet. ^^ They are awesome, Wish you could still buy them from Federal, now that you have to get them from nosler in their ammo they are expensive unless you hand load. But man will they put down the game. Really the best of both worlds.

I shot 150gr sst's out of my 300wm and 308 and they've worked pretty well for me out of both, the 300 though as I'm sure you could imagine tore a lot of meat up but they're great bullets for pigs in my experiences.

What they are designed to do, they are hornady's version of the nosler" ballastic tip" bullet If you want an exit wound look at barnes ttsx, nosler partition, nosler accubond, hornady interbond, hornady gtx, swift scricco

25-06 at 60 yds was your problem I use the nosler custom ammo (red box) in 100gr partitions. They are pretty hot at 3300ft/s and had passtrus at 30-175 yards

He shot it at 150. It ran 60.
Barnes has the TTSX in factory loads in 25-06 now. You might want to give them a try.

I shot this loop few years back. 100gr partition at 60yards. Entrance was in the chest/neck(facing me) where you see blood on his chest exit was left side of back that you can see in pic. So basically traveled 3'+

I have guided two hunters who shot deer with 150 grain SST's outta a .300 win mag.
all three were shot at around 120 yards and all three failed to exit and I found the bullets mushroom perfectly under the hide.
no blood but dead deer. However, I would expect the bullet to exit at that yardage outta a .300.
based on those 3 I would pass on the SST personally. And I love hornady bullets. I shoot the interlock exclusively
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

This is the exact reason people call the SST "The Deer Grenade". It does exactly that, grenades. At high velocity, it has a tendancy of blowing up on impact. Usually leaving a massive entrance wound.

In answer to the OP's question - yes, I have that problem. And, to me, its a great problem to have. I shoot exactly that combination and love the fact that I don't have to follow a blood trail.

I have taken numerous deer, pigs, coyotes, and other critters with a 130 grain SST out of a 270 Win running 3198 fps for many years. I have gotten a pass through on everything except a few big pigs. Most of the pigs I still got a pass through. The SST is my favorite bullet to use, personally. And it is one of the top bullets that I recommend for customers. They are very accurate, and put down game very quickly. They are not finicky on what loads they like. I'll keep using them!
I can't wait to try a 125 SST out of the 300 Black Out!
