This past weekends was a good hunt. Saw a few young six points that were small bodied and not shooters. Late in the evening sat I saw a button buck step out that I had a lot of pictures of. Nearest I could tell he was under 1.5inches on each side and had a fairly thick body. I thought "yep hes in the cooler". Took my shot at about 230 yds and a short ride back to camp. Im hanging him up as everyone is coming back empty handed. Everyone comes by and is excited to see a deer but then they act like it was shameful that I shot a button buck. I personally dont hunt horns. I hunt meat. He yielded a cooler full so I have no complaints. The rest of the night no one said anything about it but the next day the neighbor showed up and said "heard you shot a nubbin". I said yes sir. He said "ok?" and walked off. WTH? Whats wrong with shooting a legal button buck?

Why shoot a fawn? Shoot a doe.
Live to hunt, forced to work!

Lots of people hunt for different reason, meat, horns, getaway whatever but if you know that the folks you hunt with want horns or mature deer why not shoot a doe? That being said its your decision on your lease or ranch and you can do what you want. I killed one as a teenager as a mistake late in the season when 2 "doe" came in and I shot the bigger of the two. As it turned out it was a nubbin buck and my old man was cool but his friends gave me a fair amount of bs as did the processor. I have never and hopefully will never do it again.

Shoot a doe dude. That's just flat out wrong. I will never understand this.

If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

Hunting in magnolia would be better in a gated community.

You're a brave man for posting something like that with all of these professional trophy hunter critics ready to pounce. My 2 cents, as long as you tagged it legally, it didn't effect where I hunt and I know it'll be TENDER, so bon appetite!

the honest mistake can (possibly) be overlooked, but when you admit to knowing what it was before you shot, yeah, you should've seen it comin'.

Well the good news is you didn't shoot a button buck. You shot a small spike if that makes it any better. Hey, I shot one on accident but wouldn't do it on purpose though.

Who cares what everyone else thinks. Congrats on filling your cooler with what you wanted, Meat. Thats the end purpose of hunting right? Or is it just a set of horns to hang on the wall and when September/October comes along and they still have last years meat in the freezer. Is funny how those trophy hunters look for someone to give it to. Funny thing is that scenerio happens more than most trophy hunters want to admit.

Might as well...it's an antlerless & could have been a spike next yr. but wait, are you indirectly condoning the killing of spikes?

I am all for people shooting what they want, but not real hip on folks intentionally shooting fawns. No doubt they are tender and make great camp meat, but if you are truly JUST hunting for meat, there is a lot more meat on the six pointers you passed.

my thoughts too, and probably more on any doe out there.

As long as he tagged it legally, nobody should be bichin, especially if they don't hunt with him. If the TP&W can't fault him for it...nobody else should.

You got meat and had a good time. Don't worry about what others think, they're empty handed afterall. Congrats on the deer
