If the country goes down the tubes, this will be an effort in futility, but just in case things don't come to a screeching halt.
What is the real gripe about Texas allowing crossbows to be legal for non-upper arm disabled persons during Archery Only season?

I see no issue w/ a disabled using a crossbow during archery season. In fact i think in OK you can.

I have no problem with letting anyone use a crossbow if they wish during archery season. It might actually get a few more folks into archery and get them hooked. I've tried to get dad to go to a crossbow during general season for years now, to try and keep the guns off of the lease.

Not intended to sound like a gripe! Just an opinion. Archery season is a season that requires a lot more preparation and patience than rifle season. Therefore it is the part of the season that the deer have not experienced heavy hunting pressure yet. Crossbows are very similar to rifles in that pretty much anybody can effectively hunt with one. So we will see the number of hunters increase during archery season and the pressure will be increased. Why not extend general season by another month and combine both season together? Like I said, just my opinion.

Anyone would be a problem. There would be alot of people putting down there bows for a crossbow. It also would put alot of pressure on the deer prior to gun season due to the increased # of hunters in the field. I like OK seasons (Archery Oct 1 - End of deer season) (Muzzle Oct 15-Nov 2 & Nov 22 - End of deer season) (Rifle Nov 22 - End of deer season)

I'd much rather see someone use a crossbow than a rifle........As much as I would like to see a much shorter season where firearms are allowed, it aint gonna happen here, so if I could get a few folks that gun hunted to switch over to a crossbow than I would be happier.

If the economy turns around and the poulation of Texas continues to grow, I believe there will be more counties follow Graysons lead and become Archery Only, or worse, be like Collin, with no season.
I have seen plenty of evidence of the type of deer that live in Collin county, and there are still areas large enough to accomodate archers and/or crossbow hunters, just not firearms, even Muzzle Loaders.
I really don't believe that there would be a mad rush by people to take up using the crossbow. JMO.

i asked a similiar question and maybe i should of worded it a different way. the place i have access to this year is only 400 acres and everyone except one are hunting with bow. there is no way i could even try to become competent with a compound bow this season if i physically could for one and two the size of the place the less amount of rifle's the better so i thought a crossbow would be a good alternative if i was able to do so. i never intended to use a disability and was not interested in wether or not i could do so to hunt during archery season. but hunter ted made a good point that it would possibly help get more people hooked on the bow hunting wich i was planning on doing before i got banged up anyway's. a crossbow just seemed a good way to make a clean kill and not taking the chance of wounding a animal with a weapon that take's a lot of skill to become competent with.

If it will bring more hunters, imo, go for it. The growing problem here in TX will be where to put the hunters. We still need all the help we can get to preserve this heritage though.

not sure what the gripe is - the effective range is the same as a modern compound. you still have to be up close and personal w/ your game & that alone gives the animals a huge advantage.

I was speaking with my grandpa about this just the other day. He is 73 now, and has bowhunted all his life, but due to several heart problems and a shoulder problem, he has very limited range (especially pulling the bow back). I can say I think it would greatly help the sport.

Part of the joy and challenge of bow hunting is being able to draw your bow when the deer is close without getting busted. A crossbow removed this fundamental requirement in my opinion. If you have an upper body disability then I have no problems with a crossbow, if you don't then get a regular bow like everyone else and get the true enjoyment and challenge out of the sport.

I’ve only recently become aware of the issues some people have with crossbows. The responses are truly revealing. And they reek of elitism.

"Crossbows are legal during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season. Telescopic sights are lawful. Only a person with an upper-limb disability may use a crossbow to hunt deer and turkey during the Archery Only Open Season. Disabled hunters must have in their possession a physician's statement certifying the extent of the disability."

This has been probably the main argument and excuse used by those who oppose the use of the crossbow.
It's more of an elitist way of looking at it, in that the belief is people shouldn't be able to hunt during their season without putting in the time practicing thus deluting the sport, but the fact is that most bowhunters who claim that they use a conventional, more challenging bow, in fact use a highly refined and effecient compound bow that in fact shoots faster and flatter than a cross bow, and most do this from the ever popular pop up blind through a mesh screen that masks movement and scent.
The crossbow is probably the best method for a small framed person like women and less demanding for the elderly who have little upper body strength, but should be allowed to enjoy the sport also.
If you would rather the sport be more of a challenge then by all means use the compound or traditional bow, but others shouldn't be denied the sport when they may not be able to, or have the time to put into long practice sessions.
As far as putting too many hunters into the woods, this would apply to public lands since most leases have a limit as to how many people can hunt, but I guess if you have six people on a lease and only two bowhunt then I can see where they would be upset if the others decided to get in on the fun, which I think is the main cause of the heart burn when one makes the arguement against the cross bow.
Having been a bowhunter and having used both methods I will say I prefer the bow, but now with a bad shoulder I've since quit bowhunting during the archery only season, so unless they approve the use of the crossbow during archery season I will continue to only hunt with my gun.
Getting more people involved in our sport will keep us hunting longer than having selfish reasons to deny more participation in the sport.
That said as with any means of hunting a person should be proficient with that method no matter if it's a cross bow or compound, and never go hunting without being confident in what you are using.
We owe that to the animals we hunt, and most true sportsmen realize that!
Just read the link! Good one!

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

About the same in my opinion: The real problem is the noise generated by the crossbow. They have a tendency to leave the shooter at a disadvantage when it comes to range. Once you get past about 35 yards, you usually spook the animal. So I would have to say the compound has the most effective range.

Jimbo I did not say anything about practice and I am not an elitist. I was simply stating that the difficult part of bow hunting is the movement that you have to do when the animal is very close to you. Shooting a crossbow removes one of the things that make bow hunting...bow hunting.

I would have to agree with that completely, plus I don't think the rifle hunters really want more hunters in the woods before their season opens. All the technology has gone into the compound industry, they are the better tools anyways, not sure why you would even want to use a crossbow especially considering anyone can legally use a draw loc on a compound during archery season which essentially makes it a vertical crossbow that is quieter. The only people pushing this are the crossbow industry.
