I ain't got that many left since I caught around 65 so far this year. TC pics are slim right now on them with only 3-4 showing up every so often. I heard coon hides were going to be around $10 down here to start this year.

Yah the coat coon prices should be good this year. I'm lucky that I've got some really good genes along my lines. Good dark colors, not so orange looking, and big too. I average around 32 to 33 in coon. Nothing really under 30. Had two that went over 40 last year! Have to put quite a few up on coyote boards because their tales hang off the coon boards. I'm excited for this season. Hope everyone does well. I'm planning to hit em hard this year

Tommy King Fur...

He does a route all over west texas starting first week of January most places. He has a website with route info.

I heard a friend of mine say he was told $14 by king for 3x and bigger. I would call him and see.

I've been told that you might make an extra $10 per coon by saving the meat and selling it but I've never run into any buyer, etc. Anyone hear anything on that line? Being ethical- it would have to be a live caught coon you killed and handled promptly.
Another market I've read about- save the coon (assuming its alive) and sell it to houndsman for dog training. I'm not sure on the legal issues, etc.

One can only sell a furbearing animal or their meat to a Wholesale Fur Dealer, other than that would be illegal.

Is that just a Texas law? Because selling coon meat to anybody is legal here as well as several other southern states I know for sure. Don't know about northern states. I have sold coon meat in several towns here, and also have many friends old and young that do.

State laws vary a lot. Some states want certain species tagged. Same of the meat issue as well as live animals.

Sold 53 coons today. Central texas, all were prime. 4 were 3x and brought $16, large $10, medium $5, and kittens and scratch backs brought a buck. $406 was the payout for my Saturday night hunt. All taken with Savage BMag and 17 wsm. Shots were all over and not one deduction for bullet damage.

Thats an average of less than $8 per coon. Did you sell to a local buyer?
Are you stretching them on wire or wood?

No, an out of town buyer...Lindsey Fur Company out of Alto, TX. These coons were all unskinned. The ones I got docked for were not even worth the buck he gave me. Hey, that's $80/hr. I hunted from 6:30-11:30pm.

$8 an average for unskinned isnt that bad, i thought you meant skinned, fleshed and put up. Either way thats spending money. Did you freeze them or take them to him after you hunted?

It was 17* here last night, so that was my refrigeration. I hunted for 4 hrs and then went to bed. He meets me 2 miles from my house every Sunday morning. I only hunt on Saturday nights and start trapping on Thursday night. I can keep the trapped coons until Sun morning before shooting them and the rest stay in my pickup one night to be picked up on Sunday morning. No skinning, no fleshing, no storage, not much delivery.
