A Mallard Hens Bill is Orange and Black from the day she hatched till death no matter how old she gets. Ducks molt feathers. They change. Legs, feet, bills dont molt.

standard issue mallard drake...He is just a lot behind on his plumage. I shot one yesterday that looked like a early Oct Sask bird...never seen one that ugly.

I no think so, I could be wrong but I don't think drake. Look at the back feathers, no white collar or even a hint of it. Brown bandit stripe through the eyes. Everything but the beak screams hen. We don't have a good pic of the beak so I go hen.

Mallard hens have a orange/black beak, where as Drakes have more of a olive yellow colored bill. Just my experiences. I'd say a Mexican duck.

I thought even an eclipse drake had white tail feathers, and mex ducks have more brown tail feathers. Anyone know?

This is my bet. That is not a poorly colored drake, feather quality is too good.

Not need for excitement here boys. That's just a mallard drake. In another couple of weeks or so his head would have been greener and his chest feathers would have started turning also. Mexican mallards don't have that curl. If you ever make a hunt up north in October, you will see plenty of these.

Live to hunt, hunt to live.

Alright rob. The real question is this. If say you were at the point in a limit here shooting a hen would put you over the limit, would you chance it. Like if you had a hen and the bird in question. Would you be confident to shoot another hen and school the GW on gender.

X2

I've seen a lot of eclipse drakes, and they ususally have some white tail feathers.

Just going by the Bill color and nothing else I would make a strong case for Drake.
