I'm a lost cause. I don't shoot divers...not because I'm above shooting a trash bird every once in a while but because I hate cleaning a diver. Not worth the headache or time so I don't shoot'em.

Oh and plucking is completely out of the question, nothing is worth that mess.

Give me a teal or wood duck anyday.

If you lay a pile of birds down and tell her to fetch a bird...8 out of 10 times she will search for a teal. They are her favorite bird for some reason. I normally let her carry one back to the Ranger when the hunt it over and if there is a teal there I'll bet you that is the bird she grabs grin

The dog is smart, that's all. Why pick up one of those heavy big ducks when I can pick up a little bite sized teal?

Everybody talks about cans and how they taste so good, and gives the market hunting example. But ruddy ducks were highly valued back them and the original "butterball." Yet everyone considers them a trash duck.

Brazos, glad to see you enjoy the ruddys.

Because they were not thought of to be sporting birds after market hunting was outlawed, so they became trash ducks by the sportsmans own terms

Only NA bird that I don't have a full plumed drake-not likely to happen. Mexico season runs till the end of feb and in gonna go to a friends club outside mx city at the end to try and get one.

Much like coots, Ruddys spend very little time flying and the meat is a much pinker/tender meat.
