Just started..... Different strategy tho...... Coons aren't native here but ended up somehow and are working across the country (good swimmers? ) Anyway, seem to have one or more frequenting my barn. Gonna make it comfortable for them and maybe get a litter of cubs. Nab one or two for pets and then wipe the rest out. Can't hunt them with hounds here but they are kill on site with no closed season....

I trap and hunt coons often and they are a handful. It definitely seems that many people have cut back on hunting them. Which is strange do to a high coon population in texas.

Hunting with my hounds. Use them to help keep dogs in shape for other critters. Coons are numerous across most of the country in spite of droughts. Adios, Gary

Brent I am not a competition hunter. I am not a fan of the style of dogs it takes to win and I am too simple understand all of the strange rules. I want a dog that can cold trail, give mouth while doing it and not be overly aggressive on the tree for that leads to lots of other problems. I want a dog that genuinely runs to catch on the ground and if a dog is looking to tree, he's not running to catch. Just my thinking. Adios, Gary

True. I've hunted with very few pleasure dogs, but they were a lot more pleasurable to hunt than a competition dog. They're bred too hot nosed nowadays.

Been working with this guy and he shows promise. He's a year old and is half Walker hound and half who knows what. Treed this one in the garage. Chased the coon up the garage door support into the rafters.

Tell me they are breed to hot nosed at 3am when ol blue has been cold trailing a track for hours and you are ready to go home LOL Most dogs are as good as their trainer. I know a lot of guys that hunt but wouldnt have a clue how to train a good hound and how to keep a good hound going!! Not that a hot nosed dog is the way to go but im not hanging out in the woods all night with a dog that wants to run every cold track it comes across. Nothing like hearing a hot race then hearing one roll up on a tree with a big long locate then break her over to a steady chop!!! Yeah that will make you go back to the woods the next night!!!!!

I ain't talking about a blue dog I'm talking about some of the walkers I've been with. I've only hunted with two blue dogs and they both had a good nose. Really they all can do it that late. It just depends on how much experience they have running a cold track on how long and how well they can do it.

Is an air rifle enough to kill them? I have 2 high powered GAMO air rifles. I am having a HECK of a problem with them hanging on my deer feeder and emptying it out, and I am planning on doing a night hunt on the feeders with my father-in-law soon. A pellet gun just sounds fun. Plus they are quiet and I feel like it would afford me a few extra shots if the noise doesn't scare them off.

When I was young and started going by myself, that's what I carried. At the time it was one of the higher powered ones. They were in a tree so they weren't going anywhere. They would either come down or if we hit them in the right spot we knocked them out. So I think in your case you would probably be running them off rather than killing unless you hit a sweet spot.

Cut off the top of my middle knuckle on my pinky cutting one off one night. Was wearing a white t shirt and it looked like I had been shot when I made it back to the truck....
